Long distance rates

Post by Degenerate »

Hi everyone.

I signed up to FFL just several weeks ago. Loving the service thus far.

My in-laws are from Vietnam, so they like to call home every so often. I just got a notification that my world credit balance has dropped below $1.25. I looked up the long distance rate to the number, and it's 9 cents per minute, but there's also a 4 cent connect fee. Is there anyway I can score a lower rate? Perhaps buy more credits in bulk? I know the cost is still very minimal, but of course I'm always looking for ways to save money.

Thanks.

Would an option be to get them to load the Fongo app on their mobile, then you could call them for free.

No idea that was an option, but thanks for the info.

No I don't think it will be possible because I don't think they are using a smart phone on the other end.

Will keep it in mind thought.

Hi Jake,

I just thought about this, and this may be an option. My in-laws are going to Vietnam in a couple of weeks and they are going to bring back my wife's old smart phone. Even if the phone may not work in Vietnam, it at the very least can work when they are at home on wifi. I just tried registering them an account, but it says I need to purchase a world account. Can I just register them a local Toronto account, login to the Fongo app with the account info?

From what I know the 'international' version of the app runs on a different database than the normal one we get here in Canada. So in theory you would be able to register an account and get them to log into it, as they can only download the international version they won't be able to log into your Canadian account.

Some other things I would try are (depending on technical abilities):
1. getting them to download the app via a Canadian proxy so they can get the Canadian version. (if it is Android then you could probably send them the APK file, but they probably will not be able to update it so you will have to send updates as well when needed)
2. ask them to send you the phone, install the Canadian app on it and send it back to them.
3. buying a cheap phone/ipod/Android tablet here (my daughter uses a 4th gen iPod perfectly fine) loading the account on it and then sending it to them so you get the free Canadian version.
4. get them to install the free FPL desktop app on their computer. This would obviously require them to use a computer for the calls.
5. buy an ATA and the unlock key on a FPL account and send it to them. They then should be able to plug it into their network and plug a phone into it.

Obviously all these vary in cost and if they/you are able to do it. Installing the desktop app is probably the easiest, but then if they are going to use a computer you are probably better off using skype.
