Second hand ATA -- not sure if it's unlocked?

Post by mh1983 »

Hi all,

Have been reading these forums for awhile and am looking to take the plunge, buy the unlock key, and test ou FPL with an ATA for awhile. I found a great deal on a Grandstream HT701. I asked the seller if it's tied to a specific service provider and she said she didn't know what that means; that she purchased it when they signed up for "Start Communications" ISP (not sure if she meant purchased directly from them or separately).

I'd like to determine if this ATA will work with FPL. Have a read a few threads about locked ATAs, and I don't to end up with one of those. Does anyone know if there's an easy way to tell? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I have been looking to see what the HT-701 is locked to, and it appears that Start Communications does not lock their ATA devices. I have had confirmation on a few kijiji ads. That still does not say the ATA is not locked, but I have reasonable confidence this ATA will work with Freephoneline.

Thanks very much for the reply, bridonca, and looking into the question. Good timing, as I just called Start Comm. and they said the ATAs aren't locked; they may have trace settings, but performing a factory reset will wipe those, so thought I'd post that too in case it helps anyone.

Appreciate the help today and that this community provides! I'll likely need to avail of it again soon. :) Cheers!

If you do buy the ATA and want to test if it is locked or not, you can grab a free sip account at https://www.getonsip.com/. This will basically allow you to connect to a voip server and see if allows you to or not - before you jump in for the $50 unlock key.
