FPL Auto-Answers 2nd ring, despite being set to 5 rings

Post by ShortBread »

Hello all,

I was wondering if there was any recent changes or upgrades to the system starting about 2 days ago, all my calls get picked up by the FPL answering machine "nobody is available to take your call please leave a message", it literally pickups up on the 2nd ring, so i have to be holding the phone to answer it on the first ring. I have had it set to ring 5 times in the web control panel on FPL website. It has been working perfect for ages, and now it won't. I have changed the ringer to various intervals and back to five but it always picks up on the 2nd ring. I have an OBiHai voip adapter, and have not updated or changed any settings on it recently that I know of. Any tips for eliminating the cause? I'd like to know if it's on my end or your end. Its definitely FPL answering and not a local answering machine, as I don't have one, and the voicemails recorded are emailed to be as per usual from FPL.

Any ideas would be appreciated =)

Have a great weekend =)

From within your OBi's configuration, navigate to Voice Services >> SPx Service >> Calling Features. Look for CallForwardOnNoAnswerEnable and see if it is checked. If so, uncheck it.

If you use OBiTALK to configure your device, you will need to use OBi Expert Configuration to make this change.

If my guess is correct, take a look at CallForwardOnNoAnswerNumber. Is this a number you recognize? If so, you or someone in your household probably accidentally enabled it using *62. If it is not a number you recognize, it could be that your ATA was hacked. If you have port forwarding to your ATA, you should remove it unless things won't work any other way. You should also run virus scans on your computers.

Hello Mango,

Thanks for your reply, sorry I was unable to get back to you sooner. *62 is not enabled on my device, nor are any of the callforwarding options, there is no number in there. Device is safe and secure. I still can't seem to figure this out. I will be hardreseting the OBi and retrying the setup tonight. The call logs show the call come in the OBi answers and sends the call to ph1 but then 10 seconds later it disconnects and goes right to voicemail. Thanks again for your help.

Hello again Mango,

After hardresetting numerous times, and sometimes 2x in a row to be sure and manually adding my FPL account back. I can confirm without a doubt its something on FPL's end. Also if i set ring count in the FPL webpage to 1 it rings once, 2 it rings twice, anything above (3, 4, or 5) it only rings twice and FPL answering machine picks up and records a message and emails it to us. If you have any other ideas, they would be much appreciated. I am surprised no one else is posting about this; Is it just me having this problem? Anyways I might have to pay Fongo for the one-time incident fee and have someone technical on their end look at it, if not fixed soon.

Anyways Thanks for your help Mango. I just realized you are the famous Mango's OBi Setup Guide =]! I used your guide to help get me started, when I first got my OBi202.

The only other thing I could think of to try is a SIP trace.

From within Status >> Device Admin >> Syslog, set Server to the IP address of your PC.
From within Voice Services .>> SPx Service, set X_SipDebugOption to Log All Messages.

Install Wireshark on your PC. Run it and use the following filter: ip.src==your.ata.ip.address && syslog && !icmp

Obviously, replace your.ata.ip.address with its actual IP address.

Test, inspect SIP messages, and see which ends the call: a BYE from FPL, or 486 Busy Here (or similar) from your OBi.

If a BYE from FPL ends the call, a ticket would be warranted.

Thanks Mango, I ended up opting for the one-time support fee option from FPL. They setup an ATA and tried, problem was on my end but still makes no sense. My housemate messed with the answering machine on the cordless phones which is always disabled. It was set to pickup on two rings, and although disabled it would steal the call from the phones, and timeout and somehow end up back at FPL voicemail and email. I would have thought it would have just ended the call.

Any how thank you very much for your suggestions and insight. I am going to be resetting up all your fancy tips and tricks this weekend using your Mango's OBi Guide. Thanks to FPL/Fongo Support too.
