One-way audio only on FIRST call after being idle

Post by vq1 »

For some reason, a FPL device I am working on only seems to get one-way audio, but only for the FIRST call after some kind of an idle timeout. The FPL user can be heard fine when calling it, but the caller cannot hear the FPL user. If you hang up and call the FPL user right back, it works perfectly. Has anyone experienced this before? Is there a way to workaround this "timeout"?

I'm a little unclear from your description who cannot be heard.

If the VoIP end cannot hear the POTS end:
1) As always, be sure your device is configured as per the official guide, including my post below the official guide: http://forum.fongo.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=16198
2) Verify your router receives a public IP address and your modem is not also performing NAT. If it is, set your modem to bridge mode.
3) Try to forward UDP ports 16384-16482 to your ATA's static IP address. If this does not solve the problem, remove your port forwarding.

Let us know if any of my suggestions work, or if I misunderstood the problem.

Yes, it's the VOIP user who cannot hear the POTS user. So the VOIP user has just gotten into the habit of saying "I cannot hear you, please call me back and I will hear you fine". So it is strange that it always seems to work fine on the second call as if something on that first call is "kick starting" it.

I double checked the config and "Use outbound proxy" was set to YES, so I have disabled it. But I just cannot test effectively because the issue only reproduces after an idle period (exact timeframe hard to nail down) oh, and I also set USE DNS SRV to YES per (I believe your article) here: hxxp://www.toao.net/25-linksys-ata-configuration

It seems to be working ok at the moment. Will know for sure on the first call coming into VOIP in the morning.

I will look into bridge mode and port forwarding if the issue persists!!!

Thanks for the help, as always.

Please set Use DNS SRV to No, as FPL does not support it. And by all means keep us posted!

Ah, noted. Thank you.

Incidentally, did I read you correctly in another thread. Does "voip3.freephoneline.ca" exist? Something about NAT working on this one. Can I try using that server, despite it not being in the config instructions?
