- if I have to purchase the modem from another source, what is the recommended modem please?

Any OBi ATA such as the OBi100.

You may also need to purchase a new router as some routers are not appropriate for VoIP. Give the service a try with the router you have now, and if you have problems, you can consider upgrading.

I feel I must point out that all the devices mentioned in this thread are ATAs, not modems.

If you mean ATA (the things you will plug your phone into) and not modem then the advise in the thread is good. If you really mean you are looking for a modem, then the advise in this thread is not helpful at all!
