Not for the faint of heart...

My modem is the SmartRG 505, and to it I have a switch hooked up (Cisco SG102-24). The ATA (Cisco SPA122) was hooked up to the switch and using the FPL Suggested settings (from the Forum). Life was smiles and sunshine.

Due to the recent configuration changes, I had to move the ATA down and plugged into the Modem/Router directly and not into the switch. All seemed well except it couldn't register with FPL. I moved it back to the switch (non-managed), bam it works. Now back to the Router, alas not working.

I fiddled with the settings in the recommended configuration, and after changing 'NAT Mapping Enable - Yes' to 'No'. It works just fine on the Modem/Router. I can place calls again, I can receive calls again.

This should be the end of the conversation but I am concerned since I am going against the recommended settings of FPL and more importantly changing 'NAT Mapping Enable' from my googling should be making things worse not better.

Any ideas why this would resolve the issue? Or why 'NAT Mapping Enable' would be causing issues?

As long as your service is working, it is fine to leave it in the configuration it works in. Things to look out for: incoming calls should still ring your phone, and you should still have two-way audio. As long as that is satisfied, your troubleshooting is complete.

Wild guess: the NAT Mapping Enable option uses "externally mapped IP addresses and SIP/RTP ports in SIP messages". It may not have been aware that you changed your network topology and identified itself with an erroneous IP address.

Thanks Mango. Looks like you were right.

This likely had something to do with the fact that I hot swapped out the modem/router and the network topology while the switch, DHCP server and DNS servers stayed running. I tired it against last night with "NAT Mapping Enable" and it works just fine on the router. Even tired rebooting the ATA to double check.

Lessons learned, when changing network layout, power it down! :)
