[Resolved] Switching from softphone to ATA and back

Post by wormx »

Hey, does anyone know if you can easily switch from using the softphone to the ATA and back without having to go into the router settings and change the port forwarding?

For instance:
Computer w/softphone: 192.168.1.100
ATA: 192.168.1.200

Ports forwarded to .200: 13000,13001,5060,5061,6060,6061

Could I forward different ports to .100 and (assuming the ATA is offline) use the softphone without needing to change the port forwarding on the router?
e.g.
Ports forwarded to .100: 12000,12001,6060,6061
Ports forwarded to .200: 13000,13001,5060,5061

Thanks in advance!

softphone uses 13000-13001 and 6060-6061
ATA, generally speaking, will be 5060 or 5061 and the RTP ports are 10000-20000 (however, you probably don't need to forward the RTP ports as the SIP ports are usually what routers will filter out, thus causing problems)

We only recommend larger port forward ranges as a catch-all solution. SIP ports may be different on some obscure providers, and RTP ports are almost always a random port within a certain range. We like to cover our bases as it makes for less support calls ;)

What I'm getting at is, you shouldn't need to change anything to have them both work because both are using different ports.

Thanks Steve. I'm actually using the Acrobits SIP Softphone for iPhone -- can I use port 6060 for that?

yep, that should work. I believe we have several users around here using 6060
