Change Phone Number (SIP User)

Post by satoshi »

Hello, I am a Freephoneline.ca SIP account user and I was wondering how I can change my telephone number to another one since I have moved to a different province. I've searched all over the customer portal to no avail.

Hi,

Good info, thanks. I presume this article on the FPL KB is out of date? http://support.freephoneline.ca/entries ... are-moving

I moved and need to change my number as well. After the Number Change Request is completed will I need to make any changes to my SIP settings or the ATA?

Thanks.

yes, you will need to change the username inside your ATA as this is essentially your phone number. The password will stay the same.

That sounds easy enough ;) I already registered a new local number that I kind of like and was testing it with the desktop app. Do you know if it would be possible to have my old number changed to this new number? Or would I have to accept whatever new number is assigned when I request a number change?

Thanks again.

You can always send in a support ticket and ask. I believe the number change is free for the first time, so I don't know if they will go out of their way too much.

Failing everything else you can always swap a number in from another account (https://support.fongo.com/entries/53554 ... ngo-Mobile). I know that says from FPL to Fongo Mobile, but it covers to moving any FPL/Fongo number to any FPL/Fongo service. The downside of course is they charge you 5$. If you are OK with that, don't bother with the request to get a new number and just get your number you have been testing with swapped straight in.

Thanks for all the info. It's nice to have a couple options. I may just ask them to change the number to the new one I registered. If they can't, or won't do it, it's not the end of the world.

Cheers.

I was thinking it would be nice to keep the 416 number that I use with my ATA now, but change the number for my VOIP file to my new 226 number so I can use it with my ATA while keeping the 416 number for use with the desktop app only. I hope that makes sense ;)

I sent a message to Fongo support the other day asking if this was possible. They suggested the Internal Port for $5, but said "IMPORTANT: The Porting account will be deleted after the Internal transfer is complete!!!".

Before I go ahead with any changes I thought I'd ask here. Do you know if there's any way to keep my 416 # for use with the desktop app?

Thanks.

Unfortunately they don't do a swap of numbers. When you port a number you will only be left with one number and one account.

Depending on how much that old number means to you, I can suggest a couple of things.

If it means a lot, then just buy the unlock key for the new number. You will be able to log in with the ATA or Desktop device with either account. As an added bonus you will be able to program Line 2 on your PAP2T (assuming your profile is correct) with the other number so you can use both numbers on the ATA at the same time.

If it doesn't mean that much to you and you want to take a gamble, then port the new number into your unlock key account, set up ANOTHER free account then request a number change in the new account.https://support.fongo.com/entries/82140 ... ne-number- In the New Number Request section on that page is says that you can request a specific number. As long as your number wasn't reassigned in the time between your port completing and your number request being processed, there could be a good chance you will get it back again.

Personally I would appeal to their better nature and ask Fongo Support here if there was anything they could do. You never know.

This turned out to be much easier than I expected. I replied to the support ticket and asked if there was anyway to keep both numbers, but I kept getting the same cut and paste answer regarding an internal port and the porting account being deleted. After a couple attempts to get clarification someone finally replied saying "please do an internal transfer. If you note you want to swap the numbers, no accounts will be deleted."

So I called Fongo's Billing Department and they had no problem at all doing the swap. It only took a couple minutes and $5. Now I'm a happy camper. :-)

Thanks for your help. Now I just need to look for a new ATA to replace my old Linksys PAP2T-NA. It still works, but the sound quality is not great.
