Called 911

Post by beverly »

First time i used 911 and i asked them after the cancelled emergency where do i live?... they said "i don't have anything on you on screen" this might be a problem if you can't talk.. they have a number, as they called back but not a name nor an address.

That's a bit of a worry. I thought when we confirmed our details that these would be passed on to the emergency services.

As outline in our 911 FAQ: http://www.freephoneline.ca/911

With both traditional 9-1-1 and E911 service, your call is sent directly to the nearest emergency response centre. In addition, with E911 service, your call back number and address are visible to the emergency response centre call-taker. With FreePhoneLine your call is being sent via the Internet rather than a traditional phone line, and the most up to date client information may not arrive with this call, meaning a different method is required to send this client information accurately. With FreePhoneLine service the 9-1-1 call may be routed to a different dispatcher than that used for traditional 9-1-1 dialing. The dispatcher will be located at either the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) or with a local emergency service relay provider designated for the address specified by the customer at the time of service subscription or as properly updated by the customer from time to time. The call centre operator will confirm your location information and then transfer your 9-1-1 call to the emergency response centre nearest your location. You should be prepared to confirm your address and call-back number with the operator as this information may not be available to them. You are encouraged not to hang up until told to do so, and to call back if you get disconnected, as immediately as possible.

Not to be rude.but.
I think you should say "Be prepared to tell your address with the 911 operator, as this information isn't available to them." I know. I Asked. At least its useful for the living but so much for surviving a stroke or a heart attack. at least i'll hear the phone ring before i go

Your address will usually show to the operator, but sometimes may not as is covered in the E911 TOS

A few years ago the CRTC as well as the FCC (irrelevant) passed legislation that forced VOIP providers list the explicit limitations of their 911 service so that you are fully aware of what may or may not happen during your emergency call.

One possible reason your address may not be passed to the local public service answering points (PSAPs), is that they are not yet equipped to receive or display E911 address information. PSAPs are privately owned and operated, meaning it is up to private funding to accrue the funds to make the switchover from their now basic, analog system, to a system capable of handling VoIP / E911 calls.

If you intend to call the 911 emergency, the response is automatically on action. You should speak directly to the 911 operator. The service is sufficient enough to take emergency response for everyone.

eFrances, these processes outline above are the same with all VOIP service in North America. PSAPs do not yet have the technology to terminate our calls while gathering the proper data as they do with regular telephone lines so this is why we go through a secondary dispatcher. I must assure you that this company (Northern911) is a registered 911 operator and by no means will you know the difference unless you ask. Your call will be handled with the utmost urgency and emergency services dispatched to your location at the same rate as a regular PSAP.
