a couple of questions

Post by unledded »

1. I set up a free phone line in Toronto, but I'm going to be in waterloo for university soon. So will I still be able to make and receive calls while I'm in waterloo?

2. If someone calls me, will they have to pay?

If they are from Toronto, it's just like dialing a regular Toronto number.

You can make calls in and out Waterloo, with Toronto area code at no cost.

For you, it's just like calling out from Toronto.
For them, it's just like calling you in Toronto.
The internet has no "home", so you can go anywhere you want with that number and it will always act like you're sitting at home in Toronto with it.

So if someone with a waterloo number (non-free phone line number) calls me, will they be charged long distance?

If they are in Waterloo with a regular cellphone or landline they will likely be charged long distance...

If you call a 416 number from Toronto it's always a local call for the caller even though it can be a Voip line or a cellphone roaming in Mexico (of course in the case of the cell in Mexico the receiver pays).

If you call a 416 number from outside Toronto it's usually a long distance call for the caller regardless of the fact that both you and the caller maybe in the same room at the time...

My suggestion: Get a Waterloo cell number and have your FPL 416 number forward to your cell. Give people both and let them choose to call the one local to them.

... one annoying part when you come back to visit in Toronto is that your incoming calls on a SIM with a Waterloo number are going to be charged as long distance to you (provided you don't get some sort of a roaming package) so you may need to get a pay as you go SIM for the Toronto visits...so your best overall solution:

When in Waterloo:
-One Toronto FPL number
-One contract SIM with Waterloo number (it can be prepaid too depending on how much you use it).
-Forward FPL to waterloo number
-Give out both and let people call the one local to them (both will ring)

When visiting in Toronto:
-Set your waterloo SIM to forward all calls to a Prepaid Toronto SIM (or let it go to Voicemail and check that SIMs VM often while in Toronto, to avoid cost of forwarding).
-Adjust FPL to forward to your Toronto number

This is by no means a thorough solution...but at least people back in Toronto will be able to keep in touch at no charge ...

When you are in Toronto with a Waterloo cell number, make sure you have no incoming long distance charges, then have you Toronto FPL Number forwarded to your Waterloo cell phone.

Thanks for answering emoci, I completely agree.
