[not DMARC compliant] voicemail to email being automatically set as junk?

Post by alternateuniverse »

I use outlook.com email adddress. Check via 3rd party client for pop3 access.
Any voicemail as of late seems to be automatically marked as junk. Therefore I have to login via the website to manually go into junk folder to add to safe senders list. Otherwise I have no idea that a voice message has been left.

I have tried putting in a "rule" via the website, but obviously the only similarity in the senders address is @vm.fongo.com. Pretty sure can't use wild cards.

Not sure what changed on outlook side. But never used to do this. I check my email (pop3) everyday versus load up the fongo app on my phone (have to turn on wifi manually) about once a week. Or should I just have it forward to a gmail account instead and hope any voicemail doesn't get flagged?

The problem is (likely) due to the voicemail emails from Fongo not being DMARC complaint. I've described the problem here: viewtopic.php?p=81853#p81853. I also notified Fongo about this issue back in October 2024.

Therefore I have to login via the website to manually go into junk folder to add to safe senders list. Otherwise I have no idea that a voice message has been left.
Possibly doing this repeatedly may train Outlook, eventually (I'm not positive): https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/off ... b612d98eff

The Safe Senders list in Outlook prevents messages from known addresses or domains from being moved to the Junk folder. To add an email address or domain to the Safe Senders list in Outlook,

- Select Settings > Mail > Junk email
- Scroll down to Senders, and select the Safe senders and domains tab
- Select + Add safe sender
- Enter the domain you want to add. In this case, it's vm.fongo.com
- Select "OK", and then "Save"

(instruction steps generated from AI because I'm lazy and don't use Outlook)

Note that I'm not sure whether an "@" is required before the domain name (AI responses aren't always accurate).

Also ensure the domain isn't in your blocked senders list: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/off ... ickTab=Web.
I have tried putting in a "rule" via the website, but obviously the only similarity in the senders address is @vm.fongo.com. Pretty sure can't use wild cards.
Outlook doesn't permit wildcards, but you don't need one. Just specify the entire domain.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/off ... 0704d66c59

Log in to your Outlook.com account.
Click on the gear icon in the top right corner and select "Settings" from the menu.
Click on "Mail" > "Rules".
Click on "New rule".
In the "Select a template" section, choose "From a specific sender", and click "Next".
In the "From" box, type in "@vm.fongo.com" (without the quotes).
Click "Next" and then choose what you want to do with the emails from "@vm.fongo.com" (without quotation marks). You can select two actions:

Move to a specific folder: select "Inbox".
Do not move or copy items. This prevents the rule from unintentionally moving the email elsewhere.

Click "Next" and give your rule a name (perhaps, "Fongo Voicemail - Inbox").
Click "Save" to create the rule.

(instruction steps generated from AI because I'm lazy and don't use Outlook)

Note that I'm not sure whether an "@" is required before the domain name (AI responses aren't always accurate).

I appreciate the background as to why this is likely happeing and the rapid response.
The timeline sounds about right. If they knew about this, too bad they didnt put it in the faq section.

I'm hoping where I went wrong was not using the quotes for vm.fongo.com
In my few mins of trying different search terms, saw there were so many posts just picking up blocked, voicemail, or spam in topics that got lazy and didnt feel like spending 30 mins(?) reading through all the discussion threads. Tried to be as specific as possible in the title of my post... Was thinking about sending an official support ticket as well. But figured they would say that it was a microsoft problem and not them.

If only we had the technology to ask AI a question within the forums make it easier to get an instant short answer :)

In other words, I don't know if @vm.fongo.com should be entered or vm.fongo.com should be entered for both Outlook's safe senders list and the rule.
Tried to be as specific as possible in the title of my post...
I only added lack of DMARC complaince in the subject to clarify the reason for readers. I wouldn't expect most to know the cause.

It won't let me use @vm.fongo.com in the safe senders list. So added in vm.fongo.com , fongo.co and fibernetics.ca

WIll keep updated. Might even use google to check out this newly learned term if still getting caught in spam folder... Hopefully doesnt lead me down into a rabbit hole :)

As for adding to the the title of the post is good. If it helps more people searching for an answer to the same issue then even better.

That's good to know. Thanks for updating.

I also updated the thread at viewtopic.php?p=82104#p82104.

Previously, some people (not using Gmail) had issues with email being rejected completely by email servers due to lack of DMARC compliance and also having p=reject in the DMARC policy being used by vm.fongo.com. Currently, p=none is used.

However, DMARC compliance isn't being met yet, so emails may end up in spam folders.
