Yes, HT-701 works with Freephoneline.

a) Do you hear a message when attempting to make an outbound call, such as your account is blocked? Visit viewtopic.php?t=20537.

b) Refer to viewtopic.php?t=20199, and provide the requested information if you want help.

1) What brand and model modem are you using?

2) What brand and model router are you using? What firmware version is being used if you're using your own separate router not issued by your ISP?

3) The latest Grandstream HT-701 firmware version is 1.0.10.3: https://www.grandstream.com/support/firmware.

4) What is the proxy server your ATA is using (for example, voip.freephoneline.ca, voip2.freephoneline.ca, or voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060)?

5) a) Dial ***
b) Then dial 02
c) Enter the IP address you hear into a web browser.
d) Login to your ATA.

Default login password is admin.

6) Navigate to Status–>Port Status–>FXS–>Registration (also ensure DND shows “No”). Is the ATA reigstered with your FPL account?

7) Login at https://www.freephoneline.ca/showSipSettings. Double check to ensure you're logging into the correct Freephoneline account.
SIP Status needs to indicate "Connected", and SIP User Agent should reflect the device you're using. Clear browser cache before attempting to sign in. Try another web browser.

8) Your configuration guide is located at viewtopic.php?p=74000#p74000

9) Go through the steps, carefully, step by step, down the list located at viewtopic.php?t=20539. Especially do steps 1,2, 3, all of step 12 from A (use "voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060" without the quotation marks while troubleshooting) to I (all of step 12 is extremely important), 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 through 20 if incoming calls aren't working by that point.

For reference, official VoIP unlock key settings are located at https://support.freephoneline.ca/hc/art ... redentials.

There's two Rogers XB7s: Arris TG4482A and Technicolor CGM4331. Rogers isn't a modem/router combo or gateway brand.

Neither model appears to have the option to disable SIP ALG, regardless. So, use "voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060" for the Primary SIP server in the ATA.

The option to disable SIP ALG in a Technicolor CGM4331COM with this Rogers firmware version doesn't exist:
eMTA & DOCSIS Software Version: Prod_21.1_d31 & Prod_21.1
Software Image Name: CGM4331COM_5.2p12s1_PROD_sey

The option to disable SIP ALG probably doesn't exist for the Arris model either: https://forums.xfinity.com/conversation ... 7b1d7699a9 (seems to be a bad choice)

If you want to find out what brand and model you're using, login to your XB7 gateway (modem/router combo): https://www.rogers.com/support/internet ... your-modem.
Then, for the Technicolor model, navigate to Gateway-->Hardware-->System Hardware. I suspect the instructions are similar for the Arris model.

The ATA must register using one of the Freephoneline proxy servers if you want to use Freephoneline. In your ATA, it's referred to as a "SIP server".

If you're not using one, you didn't follow the guides, and I have no idea what server the ATA is communicating with.

When there are multiple devices/softphones/FXS ports (on an ATA) using the same FPL account and SIP server, only the most recent registration is valid. The previously registered device (or FXS port, in this case) will lose registration, and, consequently, incoming calls will not ring on it. This is especially important to consider if someone else is using your SIP credentials (username and password) that are found after logging in at https://www.freephoneline.ca/showSipSettings or if you're trying to register your FPL account with a smartphone SIP app (or FPL desktop app), with another device, or more than one ATA line. Only one registration per FPL account is allowed at any time. A single FXS Port on a Grandstream ATA counts as one registration. A SIP (MicroSIP) app is another.

Ensure MicroSIP is disabled while testing the ATA.

The XB7 (and I would like to know what brand and model you're using specifically) contains a router. Router features, such as NAT firewalls and SIP ALG, can cause problems with SIP signalling. I know you don't have your own separate router. However, step 18 tells you to enable bridge mode briefly to test: viewtopic.php?t=20539.

If you want to find out what brand and model you're using, login to your XB7 gateway (modem/router combo): https://www.rogers.com/support/internet ... your-modem.

When I use MicroSIP softphone, everything works, after I disable MicroSIP, there is no change in term of bridge mode.
Bridge mode means disable router functions in the XB7 and have it operate as a modem only.

The XB7 contains a firewall. Just for testing purposes, I wanted to see whether the firewall or SIP ALG was blocking communication to Freephoneline's servers. Enabling bridge mode is one way to do that. It's not safe because the ATA won't be protected while bridge mode is enabled. So, test briefly.

Granted, MicroSIP worked for you, so it seems unlikely to me that bridge mode is going to change anything. Regardless, I would check since MicroSIP isn't running from the same LAN IP. NAT corruption can occur, and it can cause problems for a single LAN IP. When a router experiences corruption in its NAT table, that could result in the router mishandling traffic for a specific device but still processing traffic for other devices correctly. Bridge mode eliminates that possibility.

Another option is to take your ATA to someone else's house and see if you can reproduce the issue.

Anyway, it's clear to me that the guide wasn't followed fully. I also don't see the results from a WinMTR test.

I just use MicroSIP to test if my home network/roger modem/router have issue to stop voip workig. Actually the I have use HT812 for few years with the same enviroment. HT701 is used to replace the suspected failed HT812, which seems having the same issue from retrospect, registed in ATA, disconnected in freephoneline sip setting.
I don't know whether both ATAs are defective. Power supplies/power adapters fail easily after power spikes and outages (possibly caused by storms). Cheap power bars/surge suppressors often don't work well to protect ATA power adapters. Having this happen in two separate devices seems odd (and I don't know how a hardware failure could cause the exact same issue on two devices, so I lean towards this not being a hardware failure; but I'm guessing at this point).

My thought was that a firewall is somehow blocking communication to Freephoneline's servers despite the ATA showing a registered status in the ATA. I've never seen that happen before (and it doesn't make any sense because the user portal should just be reporting registration status directly from PortaSIP's location table), but step 18 from viewtopic.php?t=20539 is a simple way to check. Refer to https://www.rogers.com/support/internet ... ty-gateway
Afterwards, you will have to disable bridge mode. I believe the LAN IP (access) of the XB7 may change, possibly to 192.168.100.1 when bridge mode is enabled. However Rogers' website indicates http://10.0.0.1 is still used even when the XB7 is in bridge mode.

Another possibility is that the ATA is somehow reporting an incorrect registration status. I'm leaning more in this direction, but I'm not sure what the cause would be. ATAs with Freephoneline do show registered, even when the SIP password hasn't been entered correctly, but you should hear an error message after dialing out (with Obihai devices, you hear SIP error code 403) or busy signal--and you're not hearing anything. You're also not hearing a dialtone and seeing "disconnected" in the user portal. That indicates the ATA isn't really registered.

How else did you determine both the brand and specific firmware version used without logging into the gateway?

If you can't login that suggests issues either with the Rogers representative not knowing what to do or that there's an issue on your LAN. I would fix that first.

Usually an ATA's registered status means it completed a registration process with Freephoneline's SIP server at some point within the past 60 minutes. However, that registration can be lost due to network changes (especially intermittent or unstable internet connectivity), NAT corruption, and using the wrong UDP timeout values in a router (which you can't set in yours). The Freephoneline (PortaSIP) server's disconnected status suggests that the ATA isn't really registering successfully at 60 minute intervals, despite the registration status in the ATA, given that incoming and outgoing calls don't work and that there's no dialtone.

I don't work for Fongo, which runs Freephoneline. I've done about as much as I can without a syslog from the ATA.
I'm not sure what method Grandstream recommends.

I did find this:
http://www.grandstream.com/support/faq/troubleshooting
"How do I enable Syslog feature on my unit?

If your unit has Syslog feature (generally under Advanced Settings page), you can use it for debugging any issues. There are two fields for Syslog:

Syslog Server: Enter the IP address of your Syslog Server. If you don't have one, you can enter a broadcast IP address (ex. 192.168.1.255) and then capture a trace on a PC on the same LAN.

Syslog Level: You can set it to different Levels. For debugging set it to DEBUG of course."

I'm not sure what they expect you to use on a PC. Maybe Kiwi. If you want to pursue capturing a syslog, try asking at https://forums.grandstream.com/ or https://helpdesk.grandstream.com/ for a recommended method.

I have setup Freephoneline before using a Technicolor CGM4331COM from Rogers for someone else, and everything worked. I did, however, eventually install a separate router for that household, adjust UDP timeouts, and put the Technicolor CGM4331COM in bridge mode. The firmware version appears to be different, and it's possible something changed in it that's affecting SIP signalling.

You seem to be missing my other replies, so I'll repeat this:

a) Delete Authenticate ID. It's not needed. Also, I can't see if there's a mismatch (typo).

b) Set “SIP REGISTER Contact Header Uses” to “WAN address” (I can't see if you have that set).

c) I would check to see whether enabling bridge mode in the XB7 and connecting the ATA directly to it makes any difference. Reboot (power off and power on) the ATA after connecting it directly to your XB7 while it's in bridge mode. Again, only test while using bridge mode briefly. Afterwards, disable bridge mode.

Given Freephoneline’s service is working normally, as indicated by MicroSIP working on your LAN, the responsibility ultimately lies with you to narrow down where the problem lies by following the steps from the link that was provided to you earlier.

The problem involves either your router or the ATA. You can figure out which, easily.

d) What does the phone LED on the ATA indicate? Refer to page 13 (page numbers are shown on the bottom right) from https://www.grandstream.com/hubfs/Produ ... nglish.pdf

e) Was this HT-701 ever locked to another service provider? This is a pretty important question.

f) Did this HT-701 ever work properly with Freephoneline?

g) Also try disabling “Unregister on Reboot” in the ATA. That sends on Expires values of 0 in a registration request. Freephoneline now enforces 3600 second (60 minute) Expires values, so I’m not sure if enabling Unregister on Reboot causes a problem.

I know the HT-802 guide has that setting enabled, but all the other Grandstream ATA guides don't: viewforum.php?f=15.

In Obihai devices, I'm seeing "failure code 0" when registration requests include Expires=0.

A: run in bridge mode, still the same.

Then it's an ATA issue. It's either a hardware failure, misconfigured, losing internet connectivity (this is unlikely to be the problem if the ATA was attached immediately to the XB7 and power cycled before attempting calls), or, possibly, formerly locked to another service (less likely to be the problem given the firmware version used, but I'm not positive).
I can find the IP of ATA, but in gateway, no device is shown, including the computer attached to the gatewaaay through cable connection.
In bridge mode, only one device attached to the XB7 will obtain internet access. When testing in bridge mode, only the ATA (nothing else) should be attached to the XB7. Was it?
A: phone LED is solid green.
That corresponds with the registered status in the ATA.
A: not sure, buy from market.
Did it arrive defective? Is it a used ATA? HT-701 is discontinued.
h) Do you hear anything after dialing *** ?
A: no, just busy signal
That's really bad.

Dialing *** (press star 3 times) should reach the ATA's Interactive Voice and not a busy signal. In the ATA's webUI, navigate to Advanced Settings--->Disable Voice Prompt

What is Disable Voice Prompt set to?

I feel looking at more files isn't useful yet because I do suspect an ATA hardware failure (dialing *** should reach the ATA's IVR), but in the event you do configure a Grandstream ATA again, keep what's below in mind.

a) SIP OPTIONS Keep Alive Interval should be 20 seconds--not 30.
https://support.freephoneline.ca/hc/en- ... redentials

I doubt this is causing the problem, but keep-alive packets are what keeps the NAT association alive/open.

b) SIP OPTIONS Keep Alive Max
Lost: I would change that to 6, but it's not causing this problem

c) Preferred Vocoder:
(in listed order)

Change to this:

1) PCMU
2) G729
3) PCMU
4) PCMU
5) PCMU
6) PCMU

Freephoneline only supports G.711u (PCMU) and G.729a audio codecs. Audio codec mismatches can cause calls to fail, but that's not causing your current problem either.

Okay, I'm wrong. The syslog seems pretty useful.

I'm seeing 403 Auth Failed in response to your outbound call requests.
That suggests the Authenticate Password in your ATA is wrong. Possibly you've copied and pasted blank spaces. Manually type your SIP password shown after logging in at https://www.freephoneline.ca/showSipSettings into the "Authenticate Password" field in your ATA's webUI. Disable password and form autofillers (browser app extensions) that may be filling in the wrong password automatically.

But not reaching IVR after dialing *** (3 stars) suggests a hardware failure to me, unless "Disable Voice Prompt" is enabled in Advanced Settings.

I'm going to delete the link to your syslog capture because it contains personal info.

The problem isn't the XB7.

I think you have the wrong Authenticate (SIP) password in the ATA.

I'm seeing 403 Auth Failed in response to your outbound call requests in your syslog capture.
That suggests the Authenticate Password in your ATA is wrong. Possibly you've copied and pasted extra blank spaces (before the first character of the password or after the last character of the password). Manually type your SIP password shown after logging in at https://www.freephoneline.ca/showSipSettings into the "Authenticate Password" field in your ATA's webUI. Disable password and form autofillers (browser app extensions) that may be filling in the wrong password automatically.

I've always found having the wrong password in the SIP client (ATA, IP Phone, SIP app) and having the device show "registered" with Freephoneline to be annoying, frankly. With SIP services, the SIP client should just fail registration, in my opinion, when the password is wrong. I'm not sure why PortaSIP (switch vendor used by Fongo) does that. At least with Obihai ATAs and Obihai IP Phones, the user hears a 403 SIP error code on outbound calls when the SIP Password is entered incorrectly in the device.

But not reaching IVR (Grandstream's Interactive Voice Response system) after dialing *** (3 stars) suggests a hardware issue to me, unless "Disable Voice Prompt" is enabled in Advanced Settings.

I'm not 100% positive that you have a hardware issue, but dialing *** (3 stars) should reach the Grandstream ATA's Interactive Voice Response system. You should hear a voice. That has nothing to do with Freephoneline or any service provider. The ATA should do that on its own.

At the very least, ensure that you have entered the correct Authenticate Password in the ATA. I think it's wrong. Type the password in manually. Disable all automatic form fillers and password managers while typing in the Authenticate Password.

Your syslog shows that first outbound call attempt to 437370xxxx fails due to authentication (SIP credentials fail):

1. **Initial Call Attempt (INVITE without Credentials):**
* `146.931334 ... SIPStack(0)::snd_message:(1156)INVITE sip:437370xxxx@voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060 SIP/2.0`
* (Headers follow, including Via, From, To, Call-ID, CSeq 170 INVITE, Contact, SDP, etc.)
* `146.940638 ... SIPClientTransaction::sendRequest: Request 24 is sent`

2. **Server Challenge (Requires Authentication):**
* `147.010829 ... SIPStack(0)::receiveMessage:(748)SIP/2.0 401 Unauthorized`
* (Headers follow, including WWW-Authenticate with realm and nonce)
* `147.023157 ... SIPStack(0)::cb_rcv4xx: Received 401 response for transaction 24(INVITE)`

That's normal. 401 Unauthorized initiates the challenge.

3. **ATA Acknowledges the challenge:**
* `147.022971 ... SIPStack(0)::snd_message:(345)ACK sip:43737xxxx@voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060 SIP/2.0`
* (Headers follow, including Via, From, To, Call-ID, CSeq 170 ACK)

4. **Call Attempt (INVITE *with* Credentials):**
* `147.041550 ... SIPStack(0)::snd_message:(1403)INVITE sip:43737xxxx@voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060 SIP/2.0`
* (Headers follow, including Via, From, To, Call-ID, **CSeq 171 INVITE**, Contact, **Authorization**, SDP, etc.)
* *Note: The corresponding `SIPClientTransaction::sendRequest: Request 25 is sent` message isn't explicitly logged here but is implied by the subsequent INVITE and sequence.*

5. **Server Trying:**
* `147.109423 ... SIPStack(0)::receiveMessage:(358)SIP/2.0 100 Trying`
* `147.116599 ... SIPStack(0)::cb_rcv1xx: Received 100 response for transaction 25 (INVITE)`

6. **Server Rejects Authentication:**
* `147.190314 ... SIPStack(0)::receiveMessage:(640)SIP/2.0 403 Auth Failed`

* `147.217530 ... SIPStack(0)::cb_rcv4xx: Received 403 response for transaction 25(INVITE)`
* `147.232760 ... SIPTransaction::waitForResponse: Request 25 got status code 403`

7. **ATA Acknowledges Rejection:**
* `147.207990 ... SIPStack(0)::snd_message:(345)ACK sip:43737xxxx@voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060 SIP/2.0`
* (Headers follow, including Via, From, To, Call-ID, **CSeq 171 ACK**)

8. **ATA Internal Call Failure Log:**
* `147.233614 ... ATACtrl::call, cannot make the call, statusCode = 403, chan status = CALL_DIALED, emergency call =0`

This sequence shows the normal "401 challenge" followed by the critical error "403 Auth Failed" after the ATA submitted its credentials, which confirms the authentication failure is the reason the call setup is terminated by the server.

That usually means the SIP Password in the ATA is wrong.

Strange. That's not consistent with what others have reported either and with what I’ve experienced using Obihai ATAs and IP Phones, Linksys ATAs, Groundwire, MicroSIP, and other SIP clients. PortaSIP, which is what Freephoneline uses, doesn’t work that way. You can try entering the wrong SIP password in MicroSIP since you use it. MicroSIP will remain registered.

Image

1222222222 is an impossible number, and you'll have to take my word that I'm entering complete nonsense for my SIP password.
MicroSIP says it's registered (green and online).

However, attempting to call 311 (city services) fails with Auth failed (that's 403), which is what happens when you try to call on your ATA. The reason the call fails is that the SIP Username and SIP Password are wrong in MicroSIP.

A: understood. I use the password in sipsetting in freephoneline.
Try in another web browser. Disable all form fillers. Manually type the password in. Double check that SIP User ID is entered correctly in the ATA as well (I believe it is).
My major concern is: if it is hardware issue, I can buy new one; if it is setting up issue, then buying new voip adapter does not help.
Right. Well, I can see that Freephoneline's server is rejecting the outbound call with 403 Auth failed. The outbound call attempt is failing authorization.

If you're able to call successfully using MicroSIP using the exact same Freephoneline account, then your account isn't blocked.

Re: Is Grandstream HT701 still supported by freephoneline

Post by Liptonbrisk »

Ohhhh, wait a minute.

What if this HT-701 originally came from Fongo Home Phone, and what if the ATA's MAC address is still in Fongo's system somewhere?
What if the ATA's MAC address is associated with Fongo Home Phone and outbound calls are being rejected for that reason? I'm not sure if that's even possible. If that's true I have no way of knowing.

Maybe I can ask someone.
