3G data usage.

Post by kivawolf »

Hi,

I have a iphone and I would like to get config file to use with my iphone 3G. But I only have 100MB data per month. Would like to know how much data freephoneline will consume per minute of voice call.
Thank a lot.

Here is my theory. If someone knows better I'm sure you'll see the correction here.

FPL uses the G729a codec.
G729a uses 8Kbps (that should mean kilobytes per second)
In 1 megabyte there are 1044 Kilobytes

You have 100Mb or 102 400Kb
102 400 divided by 8 (number of Kb it takes per second of talking) = 12800Kbps
Now 12800 divided by 60 (number of seconds in 1 minute) = 213 minutes or
213 minutes divided by 60 (number of minutes in an hour) = 3h33minutes.

There is overhead involved, plus the traffic is 2 way, so according to this web calculator, http://www.erlang.com/calculator/lipb/ it looks like g.729a takes up 48 kilobits a second, or 6 kilobytes a sec using a 20 ns packet.

So in an hour, you will consume 21 megabytes. You should be able to gab for 4.5 hours.

If you use VOIP at home, you can have a completely free phone service! Then set you freephoneline to forward to your cell phone when you're away from home. That way you can give people one number, it will ring your home, then ring your cell if you aren't there.

I just ran a live test with Siphon on my iPhone, codec G729 with speaking in both directions. (I called my voicemail and talked while listening to messages).

I used my tomato router to view the realtime traffic on my DSL line. Before the call I have between 0 and 0.1KB/s of traffic.

When the call is connected, it consumes exactly 4.1KB (kilo-bytes) per second, per side. So 4.1KB/s in TX, and 4.1KB/s in RX.

8.2KB/s total, * 60 seconds, * 60 minutes = 29 520KB per hour. / 1024 = 28.8 (let's say 29) Mega-Bytes per hour.

Therefore, with my test and using the original poster's 100MB per month limit, one would be able to get about 3 hours and 24 minutes of talk time.
