Hi Everyone,
I'm hoping someone can help. I seem to be experiencing a lot of echo at almost a 2 sec delay using FreePhoneLine v3.0.0.0 Beta. I also tried the previous version...same thing.
The strange thing is that it's echoing on the receiver's side and not mine. I don't hear the echo at all but the person I'm calling is hearing their own voice echo. I did a number of tests including completely unplugging my mic and the person was just speaking and sure enough, there was a 2 second echo. When I call, say, voice mail, I can hear everything great. If I call into my number and leave a message, everything is great. If I'm calling someone and they speak, they hear a 2 sec delay echo.
I'm using a P4-2.8 GHz, Windows XP SP3, I have a Linksys router but the computer is going through the router's DMZ and all the firewalls are disabled.
I also tried connecting the computer straight into the cable modem, completely bypassing the router and the echoing was still there so I've ruled out the router. I then tried another computer, an Atom PC, same problem. It's got to either be with the service or the softphone app.
Any suggestions? Anyone else experiencing this problem?
Any suggestions?

In any or all of the scenarios in which you experience the delay, have you tried completely disabling your microphone / audio input from your side?
It sounds like loop back from your speakers to your microphone, it could also be the microphone itself.

Hi Kris,
Thanks or the reply but, no, I completely unplugged the mic and speakers. Nothing was connected to the computer and there was still echoing.
My intent is to purchase a phone adapter but i certainly don't want to risk it if this isn't going to work.

To isolate the possibility of your network, have you tried it on other connections?

Re: Echo problem on receiver's side of conversation
I'm on the Rogers Cable network and going from the computer directly into the cable modem (a Motorola SB5101) is as basic as you're going to get.
The one thing I did notice is that my bandwidth performance is a down to 5 MB DL and 0.5 MB UL. Could these be a factor?
I should also mention that when I use something like Skype to call landlines, there's no issues. I previously had Vonage and there were no issues. So, I'm puzzled as to why I'm having issues with FPL. When I do a "Test Connection", the results are always ok.
What are some of the other factors that could cause this echo problem? Does the speed/processing power of the computer have any impact? bandwidth?
Edit: Just a quick update...I tried it on a totally different computer, a C2D 2.0 GHz iMac, and there was virtually no echoing! So, the only thing I can think of is that it's either the Windows computers are too slow or there's an issue with the Windows phone software.

Re: Echo problem on receiver's side of conversation
Can you please suggest the right router for me?
I have Rogers high speed as well, but my Linksys wrt54gl is not good enough, as the tech support put it. After I asked what router should I buy, so it'd work properly, they suggested me to check with forum members.
OK?
