They are the same thing. They are both ATA's. You only need to buy 1 - either from freephoneline or from elsewhere. The difference is that FPL will pre-configure it whereas if you buy it elsewhere, you need to configure it.

if you buy elsewhere, you'll be on your own for support for that device

FPL sells their ATA at reasonnable price. Sure you may get cheaper elsewhere but the price difference is not worth it. Pus buying from FPL you'll get it pre configured and garrantied.

The little money they make out of it also helps them maintain their service and network. It's worth buying it from FPL.

should i invest in a new router or will this one get the job done?

It doesn't hurt to try and see! Worst case scenario, you might need to setup a couple port forwarding rules in it.

it worked out:)
i bought a PAP2T
i was told that i would need to forward RTP ports from 10000 to 20000....something that my router doesn't support
but i still went forward, assigned the ATA a static IP. and did the port forwarding for UDP ports 13000, 13001, 5060, 5061, 6060, 6061
and yeah, I can make calls, receive calls, caller ID works, voice message (including notification) works, call waiting works.... those are all the feature i could test because I dont know how to test the other ones:P
I am gonna try it out for a week if everything is A-okay then i am gonna cancel my rogers home phone.

Btw, FPL-steve, since I haven't forwarded the RTP ports, is there something I wont be able to do or some features I wont be able to use?

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but with an ATA, you only need to forward 5060. 10000-20000 is for the software, 13000 and 13001 is also just for software as well as 6060 and 6061. 5061 is only needed if you have 2 incoming voip lines.

I only have 5060-5061 forwarded and my line works perfectly.

Absolutely not! RTP ports are just the audio ports - rarely do they ever need to be port forwarded for things to work perfectly. If it works now without them port forwarded, then there's no need to worry about it

10000-20000 is the RTP port range that Linksys devices use - as I mentioned above though, it rarely ever needs to be forwarded for things to work perfectly. We just recommend it, when we recommend port forwarding, to save us another support call in the future if only the SIP port forwarding doesn't clear up ones troubles.
