Unable to Use the Softphone

Post by snoopy_00 »

I am able to make the calls successfully.

However, there are some issues like how the recipient can hear me, but I cannot hear the recipient, or we just can't hear each other.

I have opened the UCD ports 13000, 13001, 5060, 5061, 6060 and 6061 on my computer's firewall place. I have a router, but I don't know how to forward these ports to my computer with the softphone on as I read in the FAQ in freephoneline.ca

Edited: I went to portforward.com Found my router, but when I wanted to forward the port after I clicked the submit button, it said there's a port conflict with other service. But, I don't have any other services there. So, what should I do now?

I have attached some screenshots. Hope it'll be helpful.

Thanks.

That mean that your router is already forwarding that port. You need to check other tabs in your router. Some routers will come pre-configured with port forwarding for some services (e.g. games). Delete those and then it will work.

Thanks for your help. But, as you can see I don't have any port that's already forwarding that port.

The port could have already been forwarded automatically by a UPnP device (these devices talk to the routers themselves to ask for forwarding). Additionally, it could be that one of your network devices is being set in a DMZ (or sometimes called 1:1), which pretty much means to forward everything to one network device. If this is set, then it's possible that single port forwarding would be rejected.

Finally, FPL uses UDP as protocol for voice transmission. Try to use only UDP in your forwarding setting, instead of both (TCP/UDP). Perhaps something locks those TCP ports, but not the UDP ones.

Thanks Laurent.

I checked my UPnP. The Int. Port is 2407 and Ext. Port 52680. Status: Active. So, ports 13000 is between those ports in the UPnP. Maybe that's what's causing the conflict. I wanted to turn the UPnP off, but if I disable it, the router will not allow any device to automatically control the resources, such as port fordwarding. I fear I can't port forward. So, how else can I change the Ext. Port?

If it is my network device being set in a DMZ? How do I find out? I'm sorry I am not a very computer person.

I also tried to use only UDP in my forward setting. But, still failed.

Int/ext means it's remapping the port to another port. So what you're seeing is the external internet accessible port "52680" is being sent to an internal computer of your network, to its port "2407".

What it means when it warns you is that the very nature of "Universal Plug and Play" will cease to function if you turn it off. That doesn'T mean you won't be able to manually forward ports. It just means those devices that depend on doing it automatically, won't be able to do anymore. This can be a number of things, from your torrent downloading software to a videogame console. UPnP is becoming extremely popular as a way of building devices that "just work" without user intervention. It does, however, bring security risks.

You can safely turn it off to do your tests, and then turn it back on to keep whatever system uses it operating.

I suggest is that your first try this:
-turn off your router
-turn off your cable modem
-wait about 5 minutes
-connect your computer directly to your cable modem
-power up your cable modem
-let your computer get a public IP

Now try the softphone and post results. If you are still having problems, it's your computer firewall causing the problem. My FPL softphone works fine behind software firewall on my computer AND TWO hardware firewalls (dual NAT). NO port forwarding needed.

Also what kind of firewall do you use on your computer?

I disabled my UPnP and was able to forward the ports. Now, my Softphone Finally worked!!!!!!!!! Thanks guys. :D
You guys are much better than Freephoneline's support. They recommended me to contact the manufacturer of my router.

Keep in mind that we aren't obliged to provide support for hardware that isn't our own if that hardware gives you troubles.
It's like trying to call your ISP and telling them your internet doesn't work after you bought a new router. They'll have you unplug the router, plug the modem into your computer directly, and will troubleshoot from there on. If they deem it's the router, they'll tell you to call the router support company. It's no different for VOIP - we provide the service, and if the service works, anything that may prevent it from working that isn't our own is the responsibility of the user.
