Porting Cost?

Post by needhelp »

Hi,

I presently have a Vonage phone system and I want to port the number over to FP.
I want to use softphone technology ONLY (on a PC), i.e., I want to disconnect my physical phone and router permanently.
I was under the impression that it would cost $20 for porting.
But when I called FP (BC), he told me that it was $70...$20 for porting and $50 for a configuration file?

I'm confused...I don't want any ATA stuff anymore.

They'll (administrators) will correct me if I'm wrong.

Porting is not possible for softphone because 1st you register with Freephoneline with an email address and a password. Then you select a phone number from their database. When you download their softphone all you can enter is your email address and password at registration The phone number you selected will automatically go with that email and password.

Other solution is you use another softphone like Bria or Eyebeam. But then you'll need to configure it with your number and a password they give you when you port ($25,00). But to get that password (which by the way is not the one you made up to register with FPL but one to work with your number and the system) you will need to buy the configuration file ($50,00).

But what is $50,00 for a lifetime phone line that includes so many long distances call for free?

The "softphone" software which I downloaded from Freephoneline.ca is adequate for my needs.
I only want to change the phone number...I have no desire for any new hardware or software.

I think it's simply how they figured they can stay in business while offering free voip service. If you want the assigned number and a win/mac software, it's free. If you want more than that (more = your old number and/or another equipment), then you pay a one time fee for that of either 50$, or 75$.

I was reluctant to pay for the config file as well. All I wanted was to ditch Bell and keep my number. However, after playing with several very good SIP software and an ATA device, I'm now glad I did.
