Hello All,
I'm new to this whole free phone madness and came to begin using it after reading a little article about getting set up with Google Voice. I live in Victoria, BC and I'm interested in currently using fpl as a sort of intermediary between my cell and GV.
I set up FollowMe to forward my incoming calls to my cell. I also set up voicemail to arrive in my email inbox. I then set up an account with Google Voice (using Hotspot Shield to get a US IP address).
In setting up the account with GV, I came to a point where I had to verify my phone #. I put in my fpl assigned number and eventually getting the following message: "We could not verify your phone. Please try again.". Seconds later, I get an email with Google's voicemail.
So my cell appears to be completely out of the loop. For reference, I set my FollowMe settings to "Always /Forward/" to my (triple-checked) cell phone number.
I tried using "FreePhoneLine" to answer Google's call, but I answer the call and can't get any audio... That might be the router blocking the necessary ports. I don't have direct access to the router and its settings, so changing that will be a task. But that shouldn't be an issue if I'm just forwarding my calls, right?
So I guess my question is: What is it I could be doing wrong? The call forwarding should just work or is there something else I need to set?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Tyler

Re: FollowMe feature not working
Quick additional bit of info. Based on the time it takes me to get an email with Google's voicemail versus the length of the voicemail, it seems like the call goes straight to voicemail. It'd be cool if I had another line I could use to simply call my fpl # to see exactly what's happening.

Tyler, its because you cant call a 250 number with this service. I couldnt figure it out yesterday for a awhile, until I listened to the message, said I didnt have enough credits or something to call it.. i then tried a 604 number and it worked fine.
Its because we live in 250 area codes. Until they support 250 the rest of BC is screwed.
Sorry. I hope someone that works at FPL will address this issue for us.

Cool, well thanks jij. That, at least, explains it. Too bad, though. Here's hoping they can eventually buy up some 250s.
It's funny, though... I just moved from Calgary to Victoria. Google Voice allows area code 403 for some weird reason; could've just used my number there without going through FPL. Oh well.

***Bringing this thread from the dead***
You said that GV allows area code 403 for some weird reason...
That brings my question: Then why did you not get a 403 number from FPL?

[I hope you did!]
