Can I change phone number?

Post by ffkly »

I got a 289 number in richmond hill, but I found people don't like to answer or call this number, I guess a lot people don't know where this area code is or think it's long distance, I see 647 number is avaliable in toronto, can I change it to a 647 number? I have paid $50 for ATA password.

Thanks

Unfortunately you cannot change your phone number once you've purchased a config file for it (ie. Transfer a config file to another number)

What if I want to port my home phone? Do I need to buy a new configure file later for the porting?

Of course not, the initial configuration file carries through the porting.

Be really careful before you do anything, because FPL is not responsible for numbers that cannot be ported, and you'll be stuck paying the $20 porting fee, as well as the $50 config. file. Basically, they are quick in calling you for credit card payment, and then a few weeks later, when you call in to check status, they tell you "Sorry, your number cannot be ported, or we don't support this NPA or whatever, and you'll be out $70. Even though its their fault, they will not reverse the charges. I know a friend that found out the hard way and got screwed.

If we tell you we can port a number and end up not being able to port it, we will always refund you the cost of the porting ($19.95) or allow you to put it as a credit towards anything else you may purchase through us. Your friend was wrongfully informed, or isn't telling you the whole story ;)

Myself, running the LNP Department here at Freephoneline. Can tell you that under or ToS, you will be refunded if we cannot port your number because of misinformation on our end (ie invalid NPA or other), if your number was cancelled prematurely or you decided not to port, but already had ordered the porting of your number, we would not be able to refund your initial purchase - But we would add it as a credit towards your account which may go towards anything you can purchase.

Yes, of course it is. Once you've paid, and all your paperwork is received and is valid we place the change of ownership order, which in about 7-10 days (Varies up to two weeks depending on your carrier) is ported into Freephoneline.ca's DID Inventory, then we would call you and provision the number you ported into us to replace your existing Freephoneline.ca number.

So, I can signup, get an ATA going with my new number, and if I like how everything is working THEN I can port my home phone number over without buying a new config etc?

That's correct Konowl,
I ran for 3 weeks on my original FPL number before porting my Cell number over to it.
Oh and the process is pretty simple, just a signature on a sheet of paper with some identifying information and the Freephoneline takes care of the rest.

They are processed manually, so it can take a while depending on their volume of requests at this time. I couldn't tell you what their current volume is, I'm just a shmoe who tries to have all the answers ;)

Like wise if you don't have an ATA and you want to test a config file you can try a soft phone or an Asterisk style setup, but generally speaking I've found this to be pretty solid, when you do get a config feel free to ask back here for help, the admins are speedy and the natives are friendly.
