Interested in HP. Adapter Questions

Post by tonten »

I've never tried/or had VOIP and am interested in the home phone service.

I don't know how the call quality is (does signal degrade the longer you talk? etc etc) So I would kinda of like to "try" out the service first.

However, I find the porting phone number and the adaptor + shipping is a bit pricey.

I am wondering what adapter does Fongo uses? Would the "Obihai OBi100" work with fongo? It costs only $40 dollars on amazon.com with free shipping whereas the adapter that comes with Fongo is $60 + $15 shipping (does this include tax?)

Thanks.

As long as you have a stable internet connection, then you should have no trouble with VOIP. It doesn't degrade in any way the longer you talk. Obviously if you don't have internet then you don't have a phone line, so this is one thing to keep in mind. Most people have cell phones also, and fairly reliable internet connections, so this isn't a huge problem but one that needs to be pointed out.

Fongo Home Phone does not have a try before you buy option, but there are a couple of things you can try for free before hand.
The Fongo Mobile App for Android and iDevices can be installed for free. You will get a real number and be able to make free calls using your mobile device.
www.freephoneline.ca offers a Desktop app that you install on your computer. Again it gives you a free number and you can make free calls using your computer, so you will need a mic and speakers.

I believe the Home Phone uses a Grandstream ATA. If you want to buy your own ATA, then FPL may be a better option for you. FPL offers an 'unlock key' for $50 which basically unlocks your account so you can use your own device.

For testing, install a mobile app or desktop app and see what you get.

For getting a working phone line in your house you have 2 options. Fongo Home Phone or FPL. With FHP you buy the adapter from them and then a service fee every month. This option comes with official email support. With FPL you buy your own ATA and the unlock key for a one time fee of $50. This option does not have a monthly fee or official support, but there are lots of people on this forum that can help you get going.

If you are willing to roll your sleeves up with this, FPL may be the way to go - otherwise I would suggest going with Fongo Home Phone.

With EITHER option you can port your number in at any time.
