Another dropped calls case

Post by constant77 »

I know this is a bit long but take some to read this post. Thanks !

Hi guys,

First I would like to start off by stating that I am very happy with your service overall and the fact that you provide this at minimal costs is a breakthrough in our sometimes overpriced telecommunication world.
I have bought your configuration file and ported my phone number last year in September and everything went smooth. I configured my number on my Linksys PAP2 adapter and it worked very well for a few months until I started to experience this very annoying dropped calls problem. The call drops behavior is random and cannot identify a certain pattern when this occurs. It can drop after 5 minutes then be able to talk for hours or I can use my phone for an entire day and wouldn't drop or the next day would drop at almost every phone conversation. Let me provide you details about my Internet connection/hardware at home. I have a 5 MB ADSL Internet connection with the following hardware devices:
1. Speedstream 4200 ADSL Modem
2. Linksys WRT54g with Tomato/MLPP 1.27 firmware
3. Asterisk Linux server 1.4.1 – This server started managing my SIP numbers way after the dropped calls issue first occured

My troubleshooting consisted in:

1. Configured my PAP2 according to the FreePhoneLine recommended settings on my Configuration Page and Forums
2. Downgraded and reset my router firmware and even switched back to the initial manufacturer firmware- problem still persists
3. Reset my Linksys PAP2 adapter to the factory defaults and reconfigured it problem still persists
4. Installed a SIPURA firmware on my Linksys PAP2 adapter- problem still persists
5. Continuously pinged and tracerouted voip.freephoneline.ca and no dropped packets
6. Bypassed my router completely - problem still persists
7. Installed an Asterisk server to manage all my SIP phone numbers- problem still persists
8. Used my other international SIP phone numbers with the same equipments– no dropped calls
9. Power-cycled all my equipments hundreds times :) - problem still persists
10. Beat my wife and kids – My frustration problem solved but the dropped calls problem still persists

and many other things that I simply cannot remember at this time!

I know you guys only provide support for your SIP client and best effort for people like me but , believe me, I banged my head to find a solution to my problem and so far nothing. I read very carefully all the posts about the dropped calls on your forum and apparently I am not the only one experiencing these kind of problems.
Also, some of my friends that bought your SIP configuration file from you experience the same exact issues like me but they designated me to be their “speaker”.
FPL-Steve in one of the posts stated that “the number of people having this problem can be counted in two-digits, versus the high tens of thousands of regular daily uses”
With all due respect I am more and more convinced that this a recent problem with your SIP infrastructure and the people are simply not complaining enough because they are either not using this as their main phone line or whatever. Is there anybody out there that has a solution to this dropped calls problem? FPL tech, if you want more details or my phone number to capture some logs contact me and I will PM them no problem! Thanks ;)

What level of logging do you have the Asterisk box doing?
Might consider taking some Wireshark logs or at least some TCPDumps while you're making calls for additional info if you're up to it.
I would offer to help you sift through the data, but there's a serious privacy risk in that. So if you do ask for help looking through logs you take with Wireshark etc, please only send me logs taken while you know the conversations were un-important and un-incriminating. (No long mushy, I love you darling calls ;) )

I've been trying to track down what is causing some users to meet with this myself.
The few times I've managed to cause drops, it has usually been by overloading my system (I use a softphone), at which point it likely fails to send a timely keep-alive packet.
