Long Distance issues; I'm sure it is my router - Resolved!

Post by marksy »

Okay so my saga continues. Per the suggestion of a tech support person I upgraded my firmware on my Linksys WRT54GS router using DD-WRT v24SP1. He stated that it would give me far more options for VOIP Service. It actually has (although I'm a little green on most of them) and also allows me to assign a static lease to my ATA.

However, before and even after upgrading the firmware, I cannot use the long distance codes at all. When I call the code (many of them were tried) there is simply dead air. After 20 or so seconds I get a fast busy signal.

I am 100% convinced that it is my router as if I remove it and plug my ATA directly into my modem I can use the long distance code and make a call. The problem of course is that I then have no Internet.

So the million dollar queston; does anyone know what I need to do / assign / change in my router to make this work?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Apparently Milkfish is the answer to your problems. Milkfish is supposed to be able to route your VOIP traffic transparently. Sadly I am very green to DDWRT, so you will have to look at the documentation yourself. Or you start forwarding ports which is what everyone else has to do.

Thanks bridonca,

I wondered if Milkfish might be used on there. I am very green at it too (DDWRT), but I have forwarded all of the ports.

for the very first call. After that call I had to restart my ATA. Then it worked again for one call. A pattern developed.....

So in taling with one tech support (cannot remember his name) he sugested flashing my Linksys (WRT5$GS version 1.0) with the DD-WRT firmware. I did it and now I am stuck with local calls only. Cannot even call FPL tech support.....dead air.

That issue - Tech support dead air, could be solved in most cases with changing your codec, which one are you using now?..

Should be using Preferred Codec: G729a, Use Preferred Codec Only: No.

If this does not work, try using G711u..

Not saying it has to be you, but would anyone else who's running DD-WRT and Milkfish be interested in sticking a short "how to" in our device configurations guide?
I'm sure someone else is bound to have this problem in the future as we continue to grow, so it could be beneficial to have that info handy for our customers!

Steve, I'll try to do that (soon), it is the least I can do for all the help I received.
