Allow Free Phone Line number to be added as Follow me

Post by xtraHead »

Hi,
I'm trying to add # to Follow me list and it shows an error
"You can not use FreePhoneLine number as FollowMe number"

Is bug or feature?

Feature to prevent people from harvesting free phone numbers ;)
We ran into some big problems in the past when allowing people to do that.

How about offering virtual phone numbers for a fee.

This acutally creates a problem for me. I purchased a cell phone that I can leave in the car - it talks to bluetooth and plugged into the lighter - that way it is always on in the car. Got a freephoneline number so that any voice mails are e-mailed to me, and call forward would send calls not answered to other numbers (such as the cell phone I keep on my hip and home number). I recently made the jump to FreePhoneLine for home with an ATA box - but now I can't forward my cell to my home when it is unanswered.

Possibly an exception for customers to forward to home if they has signed up for a physical home service? That way we are forwarding to home, just like any other customer could. It sucks that by using more of your services (and ones that I now payed for) I am restricted in what I can do.

Thanks for the service btw - love it

This is about the only draw back with FPL as far as I am concerned. Everything else is perfect and has saved me a fair bit of money over the months.

As a suggestion maybe it could be implemented that we could pay a one off fee and that would allow us to forward ONE other FPL number to our main FPL number. I would have thought that this would be fairly easy to monitor and would not allow abuse of the system.

Buying a second number for $2 a month is OK, but it doesn't really help in this case. I would much prefer to pay, say $20 or so, and allow me to forward a second number to my main number.

Can anyone recommend a cheap/free call forwarding service in one of the areas serviced by freephoneline. I figure what I could do in the meantime is double forward a phone. i.e. forward the cell to a free service which would in turn forward to home. That way I still get all the benefits of freephoneline and can forward to home when the cell is not picked up.

Magicjack does an excellent job of forwarding numbers. I currently use it to forward to my Freephoneline Calgary account. Freephoneline currently does not have Halifax numbers. Magicjack does. So people can call me by either calling my Freephoneline Calgary number, or my Magicjack Halifax number and it will ring to my Freephoneline ATA at my home in Halifax. The down side of course is the cost. A Magicjack device costs about $40 on eBay, plus $10 for a Canadian number, and then $30 a year after that.

$30/year is already a good investment plus you can call entire US and Canada free and a portable good quality Magic jack soft/wired phone in addtional to the FPL ATA at home.

The Magic Jack softphone quality is a lot more better than the FPL softphone and you can switch between different audio devices easily on the fly.

Good deal!

I do the same too.

For FPL you will need to restart the softphone after you switched audio device, I have experience of my bluetooth headset running out of battery, after switch it back to the on board sound device, the FPL softphone lost the voice and I have to restart and make the call again. This is not the case for Magic Jack softphone, just switch the device on the fly and continue the call.

FPL may need some more investment in the softphone to make it work better.

Of course, you can pay them $50 for the configuration file and use what ever sip phone or ATA you want. No free lunch!
