A good router
I am certain most if not all problems people have with freephoneline.ca connection issue are NAT related. And a lot of routers are just not up to the job. So you need a new router. if you have been shopping for a new router, you find there are a lot of options, and a lot of them are either not much better than you already have, or are very expensive, or does not use the latest technology. I think I found one that will cover most of the bases. The TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND for $50 at Canada Computers. http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_ ... _id=026991
As is, this is a very good N router at a good price, but it also can run 3rd party WRT firmware, that is geared to make VOIP work.

Re: A good router
Thanks for sharing!
I'm very tempted to pick one up for that price!
I'm making this post a sticky.
How about we all share our routers that work perfectly with VOIP services?
I will also vouch for the D-Link DGL-4500 and DGL-4300, as I actively use both on different VOIP networks at home.

Re: A good router
Did you have to setup manual port forwarding to get it working? We get a lot of customers calling in what that router who need port forwarding rule and/or DMZ setup to use VOIP on it.Red89GT wrote:I use a D-Link DIR-615, and have never had any issues with it and FPL

Re: A good router
Yes I did have to use port forwarding, but it only took a few seconds to setup. I also setup a DHCP Reservation for the ATA.(though I don't think it was necessary).FPL-steve wrote:Did you have to setup manual port forwarding to get it working? hmm now that I think of it maybe this isn't such a user friendly router
But I have never had a dropped call or any other issues like some of the uses have had with this voip service

I had many problems with the Linksys wrt54gp2 so I went out and bought a Handytone502 brand new and not once did I have any issues and the price for 45$ was great at the time! When I first plugged it in put the settings in it and voila, works like a charm for over 1 year and counting!

Re: A good router
Funny, when I follow that link for the WR1043ND at Canada Computers, I see a price of $79.99.
I checked at NCIX and it appears to be $10.00 less there:

At the time, that router was on sale for $40, it has since gone up in price as noted.

bridonca,
Did you end up getting one of these TP Link? If so, how is it performing?

Re: A good router
No, I have multiple DD-WRT enabled wireless G routers to keep me occupied as it is! I would personally recommend these older routers because they are cheap and do the job, but some people need the latest N technology, so I hoped to steer them to something that did not cost an arm and a leg, and/or was garbage. Sadly, that particular router seems not to be $50 anymore

Re: A good router
I'd like to chime in with my findings. I have a Linksys WRT54GL router (L for Linux) which I flashed with Tomato firmware.
In tomato, I setup a few rules for Quality of Service (prioritize small packets, limit to 95% for normal traffic, proritize anything SIP and also prioritze FPL's own servers).
I did a bunch of test calls, some of 20 minutes or so, and the quality is incredible. I love this service, so far. Not a single delay or jitter or glitch in the 20 minutes communication I had (from MTL to Florida).
The setup took me 5 minutes, following a Howto I found, plus some personal tweaks.

Do you know for sure if your QoS is working? Try this.laurent wrote:I'd like to chime in with my findings. I have a Linksys WRT54GL router (L for Linux) which I flashed with Tomato firmware.

-While you are on the phone talking with somebody, advise him that you will be conducting a test.
-Log in to speedtest.net and prepare to measure your download/upload speed.
-Tell the other party to just listen, then start talking on the phone non-stop (you might want to grab a book and read a page or two).
-While talking non-stop, start your netspeed test.
-When the speed test is completed, ask your phone party if he noticed breakup of your voice. If all were good, then your Qos is working, else forget the illusion of Qos (for now).

Re: A good router
Well, nothing like a good ol' test to make sure things work fine. I followed your suggestion and ran a few speedtests while talking on the phone. Absolutely no difference, no glitch, no delay. QoS indeed works fine
What's nice in Tomato is that it produces a list of realtime traffic based on the classification, so I was able to quickly determine when my VoIP traffic was properly flagged as "highest priority" when I set it up initially.

Could you please show me the screen shots of your Tomato setup pages ???
I don't want to see personal info on them of course.

Re: A good router
Have tried the speedtest route which saturates down or up for a short time, but found the test that worked for me was to dl the latest linux builds with utorrent. When the both up and dl are saturated then dial your voip line, see if it still rings, then call someone and talk for while to check call quality. Based on that I had to adjust the QOS settings on my dir-601 running DD-WRT. If my router supported tomatousb that would be a good option to use.

Re: A good router
I'd recommend the Asus RT-N16U very popular router running Tomato & ddWRT
Has a good SOC and 128MB of RAM. Highly recommended on the Teksavvy DSLReports.com Forums
I'm currently using the Linksys E2000 /w conjunction of the SPA-2102
/w The 2102 all traffic from my Modem goes to the VOIP Box and then out to the Router
Removes the problems with Bandwidth.
Also used the DIR-615 not a bad Router but when your saturating all of the bandwidth on other things
VOIP does get choppy.

Mike Shinoda: Did you flash DD-WRT onto your DIR-615? I have a Trendnet router with the same specs as your DIR-615, flashed with DD-WRT, and I have no issues with VOIP and torrents.

Linksys WRT54GS has been perfect for me with freephoneline. It's wireless G so you can get a better price than many of the N ones. Mine was $34 with no tax and free shipping to Canada on ebay. I use Tomato firmware, DD-WRT also works perfectly. Never experienced any choppiness.

SpeedTouch 780WL Combos are very good. I am going to pick one up this weekend.
SpeedTouch 780WL is all in 1 [Modem,Router,Wireless,USB,VOIP] and they go for approx 50$ to 60$
Save yourself the headache of having 3 boxes all plugged into the wall and have ONLY 1 box that takes care of everything.
