Softphone does not work

Post by videogirl »

I have no idea if I am posting in the right area.

I am trying to use the softphone on my computer but I cannot get it to work properly. I tried dialing my house and it dials my house however I cannot hear anything on either headset nor phone. I tried other numbers and it does not even ring. It looks as if the call has been picked up as it starts counting down the call yet I cannot hear them nor can they hear me.

It is not my firewall as I tried closing it and trying with the same results.

I do not have a router. I am using a modem to connect directly to the internet - Speedstream 5360.

My provider is acanac and I am on windows xp.

As far as I have read you do not need any configuration to use the free online softphone and it should work easy enough. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

Have you made sure Windows Firewall is allowing the program, freephoneline.exe?

There is also an option to open ports which you should use to open 13,000 and 13,001 all under the protocol UDP.

I do not use windows firewall. I use another firewall. Do I do the same thing to the firewall I have? Although the firewall I have already asked me if I wanted freephoneline as a trusted site and I clicked yes.

Do I still have to do the above with Windows Firewall even though I do not use it? I did the first part anyway but when I tried putting the ports in it would not let me do it in WF.

Thanks.

Maybe if I knew what firewall / antivirus you are using I could help you a bit more, try disabling it completely (Only for a short while, just long enough to see if the phone will connect - 20 seconds should be enough).

Have you tried only using your computer speakers?, do you have another headset you could try?

whats your ip?
if your ip is 192.168.x.x then your Speedstream 5360 is acting like a router
need to set DMZ (router) or dial out (PPPoE on your computer)

do you dial over Ethernet? PPPoE?
if you do, then it's something software

Something I found on Bells site, which tell's me your ip is 192.168.x.x and don't PPPoE (dial out over Ethernet) on your computer

Step 5. Configure your system
Your ISP provides automatic assignment of IP addresses for both Dynamic and Static service types. In
most instances you will be able to configure your computer simply by setting it to obtain an IP address
automatically.
The instructions which follow are for automatic address assignment. If you wish to configure your system
manually please see the help documentation provided with your computer.
To use automatic IP address assignment via DHCP:
Windows 2000/XP Settings:
a) (Windows XP) Click on Start, go to Control Panels, and click on Network Connections.
(Windows 2000) Click on the Start button, go to Settings, and click on Network and Dial-up
Connections.
b) Right-click on the Local Area Connection icon and choose Properties from the pop-up menu.
c) In the window that opens, click on Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) to highlight it and then click on
the Properties button.
d) In the window that opens, choose Obtain an IP Address Automatically.
e) Click OK on all open windows. You may need to restart your computer for the changes to take
effect.

I use Commodo Internet Security.

I have disabled my firewall completely and tried calling with no change.

Have you tried only using your computer speakers?, do you have another headset you could try?

The headset I have is brand new and works on skype with no problems at all.

I do not have a static IP as I am using Acanac and you have to pay to have a static IP so mine is dynamic. My IP is the 192 but also when I open freephoneline I get a box telling me I have more than one active ip address and which one do I want to use. One is 1692542859 and the other is 672043285. Not sure which to pick so I go with the first.

I dial over PPPOE. I followed the instructions below and I my settings were correctly set-up as per below.

I tested the softphone again today and dialed my own house line. The phone rang and my daughter picked-up and could hear me with no problem. I could not hear her at all - just dead air.

First thing, before we go any further.

Have you tried using the second IP address?

usualy one way audio is a outgoing or incoming port that is blocked.
mute is on or speaker device not set properly. volume not turn up enough, speaker in the mic/mic in the speaker jack.
what does Test Connection say?

does your daughter hear dialing tones when you push them? you should hear them for sure on the headset. if she can't, its a port outgoing .
too bad FPL didn't make their software to use UPnP so it's automatic. (doesn't need for you to do anything but use.)
