E911 Disabled completely??
It has come to my attention regarding the pain & grief regarding this 911 service confirmation. Personally, I think its a real pain in the ass. What happens when a customer moves out of the country?? Most of the time, FPL is setup for another person without any knowledge of computers, etc. Rather than calling the customer to confirm address for 911, is it possible to COMPLETELY DISABLE this confirmation ?? Here's a simple example.... lets just say I setup a FPL for an older senior that has NO COMPUTER knowledge, and she only uses it to make & receive calls on their laptop. What if she leaves the country for 6 months and not come back?? Rather than FPL calling the customer to confirm her address, etc., the poor old lady or granny has NO IDEA who FPL is, and scared to confirm anything and hangs up. Thus, her account gets completely DE-ACTIVATED just because she is too scared to give out her personal info and afraid of scammers on the other end. Basically, is it possible to put in a "clause" asking each new user that signs up whether if they want this 911 service or not??

Re: E911 Disabled completely??
It is a logical suggestion - However we and all other ITSP's and POTS carriers are legally bound to the regulations set out by the CRTC.
All phones, virtual or otherwise, MUST be able to dial emergency services - Hence the reason 911 will always work regardless of whether you are certified or not.

Why not disable it completely, so that one cannot use it to dial 911 at all? Basically, in Layman's terms, each user should have a "choice" to choose whether if they want "911" service on their line or not. They should have this "right". After all, VOIP is really intended to use as a second backup/alternative line anyways.

In 1997-98 it was mandatory that all wireless carriers must provide unlimited, free 9-1-1 calling to it's customers, regardless of their account status. Shortly after it was made law that all phones must be capable of dialing 911, even without active service (ie. you haven't paid your bill!). Even cell phones as long as they are charged can dial 911.Pirate wrote:Why not disable it completely, so that one cannot use it to dial 911 at all?

I can assure you that VoIP is not really intended to use as a second line for the millions of people in Canada alone who use it, ITSP's are of course still developing into worldwide networks capable of providing low cost alternatives to traditional copper POTS lines. After all, VOIP is really intended to use as a second backup/alternative line anyways.

The "real" reason why its considered "secondary" is because the technology is not fully there yet. Pretty much all VOIP providers are still experiencing TONS of bugs. The ONLY VOIP phone provider that is working properly at the moment is SHAW. All the other guys like Vonage, Acanac, Primus, etc. are still having tons of complaints.

to disable 911 just "911!" in your dial plan.
