Just updated the firmware for my linksys router and everything works just fine, I don't even have to touch the forward port setting.
The firmware I installed was
08/28/2009
Ver.4.30.14
Download 3.20 MB
It is for WRT54GL but it works on my WRT54G ver2

Re: Linksys router WRT54G ver 2
You may want to try going to DD-WRT for that model.
Linksys WRT54G v2.0
Router details
Additional information
Chipset BCM4712
* These unit seems to run more stable on the VINT builds.
RAM 16 MB
FLASH 4 MB

DD-WRT is a GREAT 3rd party firmware that turns the router into a corporate one worth $300+. You can do things like setup VPN access (so that you can connect to your network from anywhere) and also have 2 wireless networks - 1 segregated from the network and has internet only, and 1 that has full network access. They each can have different encryption, or the same.
