Why does Fongo charge for home service?

Why does Fongo charge for home service?

For the Fongo home phone, Fongo charges $4.95 per month. I'm just wondering why when the rest of their service is all free?

Is there any way that we can just buy the hardware outright and not have to incur a monthly fee?
