Internet speed test
For those who are curious about knowing their internet speed here are links to speed tests. I'm giving more than one because one test is not accurate just by itself. Also remember, the closer you are from your CO (the office where you get your internet, ex. Bell Canada's office) the better the speed (not more than 5 KM should get you very good results).
Don't forget that with DSL you automatically lose 14-17% of the speed you contracted for (called the overhead). Other important factors among others are the condition of your house wiring, your modem and if you have good filters plugged in the wall socket to seperate the phone and DSL signal.

Re: Internet speed test
Thanks for mentioning this! It's something most people don't realize with DSL which leads to them getting angry when they're "paying for a 5mb line, but only get 4.5mb"callopsitte wrote:Don't forget that with DSL you automatically lose 14-17% of the speed you contracted for (called the overhead). Anyways, here's mine at home on our DSL here:

Re: Internet speed test
So those of you on cable are getting much faster download speeds. Rogers upload doesn't look too good compared to cogeco.
I've heard that the cable co's are pretty stringent about charging extra for going beyond your upload limits, and that is a pretty small limit. Is that true? What are your download/upload allowances?
Also is it true that your cable speeds slow down a lot during prime time?

I also read on DSL Reports that Rogers is lowering their bandwidth caps and upping their overage charges.TSellers wrote:I've heard that the cable co's are pretty stringent about charging extra for going beyond your upload limits, and that is a pretty small limit. Re: Internet speed test
One thing about Cogeco in general: they are truthful to what they say in their advertisements - you don't have to worry about how much it's going to cost at the end of the month, because it's always the same (unless you have overage which you can control). The only problem with this is that they are priced higher than most companies and don't give any real deals. (rogers will give 1 year free HD for instance with the purchase of a new HDTV - cogeco - 6 months half price, commitment 1 year)
One thing about cogeco is that they are STABLE beyond belief. I've had 2 outages in the last 3 years of internet that didn't last for longer than 30 min.
Another nice thing about cogeco is they do give you throughput speed, but unfortuantely they are like most with the UBB. my cap is 60gb but here are the packages and their rates.

Re: Internet speed test
Rogers upload bandwidth limit depends on the tier you are on. My tier limit is 500 kbps the next tier is 1mbps. I have never seen any slow down and in 2 years of service was down once due to line upgrades.TSellers wrote:So those of you on cable are getting much faster download speeds.
