Loud hum in background during dialtone and calls

Post by vitzbitz »

Just connected my ATA at my new home and when it connected I noticed a loud hum (this drowns out the dial tone quite well), the hum remains when dialing and stays on the line during conversations.

I thought it might relate to the household wiring so I disconnected the ATA and connected a phone directly to it. The hum remained, I also switched phones to make sure that this was not a problem related to that handset.

No dice. I still have a loud hum on the line. Any suggestions?

I'm wondering if it's electrical noise being introduced into the ATA that's being passed onto the phone.
Do you have access to another ATA to try? Or to try connecting it at someone elses house and see if the same happens?

Wow, ok. This issue resolved itself with no indication as to either the cause or the solution.

That sort of thing makes me nervous, wondering if and when it will reappear.

Maybe Steve is right and it was electrical noise. Just to make sure did you move your ATA? It's recommended that each device (modem, router, ATA, computer, etc) have at least a 3 foot distance between them.

I doubt that very much - my modem and router and ATA are sitting on top of each other right next to my answering machine (I don't use the voicemail service yet... gotta convince the wife) right next to the main base station of my portable phones. They're all located in a 1.5 foot square shelf on my printer trolly.

I have no issues with sound quality what so ever.

How close is your cordless phone base station to your router and to your ATA? I have a 5.8 GHZ phone that you would think should not be affected, but if the base station is next to the router/ATA I can hear the interference.
