Static iP for ATA box?

Post by Mak24 »

Does the IP for ATA box need to be static? In case the ATA box needs to be recycled, it's iP may change upon rebooting it. And if so then one will need to port forward 5060 port in the router config to the new IP for the AtA box. Am I correct.

Thanks in advance.

It is usually better to set your ATA up with a static IP when you have to do port forwarding, as you rightly pointed out.

If you can try and avoid forwarding port 5060 and just forward the RTP ports.

Thanks for the quick response.

Could you please elaborate on forwarding RTP ports please. By RTP port forwarding, do you mean open UDP ports 16384 to 16482. I would still need to direct it to the IP for the ATA box, which may change upon power recycling. Please advise

Your ATA device needs an IP address that the router can always know where to forward ports. Setting up an ATA device at a static IP is an option, but I personally frown upon it. The reason is, if you move the ATA to another router that is not set up on the same IP range as the old router, you are in for a bit of difficulty when trying to access the ATA.

A better option is to setup a static lease on your router for your ATA. If you have a router that can do this, DD-WRT routers specifically, you can set up the router to assign a specific IP by using the MAC address of the ATA device. That way, your ATA still has DHCP enabled, and the router will use the same IP for the ATA device even after power down. You can then forward specific ports to that ATA as needed.

I would not waste my time forwarding 5060, because it is an outgoing port. You do need to forward UDP ports 16384 to 16482 to the ATA if you are using the Cisco ATA default RTP ports.

Check your ATA documentation. My ATA is an OBI202.It requires a number of ports to be forwarded. Without this you get only "one way voice". It may depend of the router type and settings also, you "may" be able to go around. Probably not "all" ports are really needed (some may be if you use OBI management portal only), but at least some are needed. You need a static IP for this. Dynamic may work only if your router supports assigning a specific IP to a specific MAC address. This is a feature only some modems support, it's not standard. The effect is basically same as a static address overall (you always get same address) but the ATA can stay in DHCP mode.
