256k upload OK?

Post by digidad »

I am currently with Teksavvy on DSL - 5M/800k, using DD-WRT for QOS. Freephoneline is working great!

Teksavvy is moving into Cable Internet as well and is offering 3M/256k. It looks to be a good deal, but is 256k upload speed sufficient for VOIP/Freephoneline? The next step up is about $10/month more to get 512k upload speed.

More than enough, however, you will need to make very sure your Quality of Service is properly set because with the smaller upstream capacity, you will be more likely to experience congestion problems.

I had the exact TSI cable service 3000/256 installed couple of weeks ago.

One G711 call is perfectly fine. Two G711 calls are also just fine but they almost completely saturate your upstream, so forget about browsing if you are on 2 calls. Three calls, no go, delays and break ups.

Now with G729, it's much better. Unfortunately, FPL only allows G729 on outgoing calls.

Sounds good. I currently use their DSL but in order to completely switch to FPL, I would need to pay for a dry loop. If I go with Lite Cable, I'd be paying the same monthly rate as DSL, but no dry loop charge and no more phone bill.

Now I just have to wait for TSI to come to Burlington/Oakville on Cogeco.
