Porting number from an active DSL line & switching ISPs

Post by digidad »

I have an 'order of operations' type question regarding number porting...

I currently have 6 mbps DSL service from Teksavvy on a standard POTS line that they also provide. (ie. one bill from Teksavvy for Phone + Internet)

I am looking to move to another FTTN ISP on a dry loop while porting my existing phone number to Freephoneline.

If I understand correctly, the first thing I would need to do is request the number porting.

How do I then schedule my change in ISPs for minimal-no downtime? Since the time to port the number is a range, I cannot schedule the cutover between ISPs for a specific date.

If the number is ported too soon, then presumably this will leave my line in a compromised state and I will have no Internet.

If I go dry loop first, then I probably lose the number that I wanted to port.

Please help me understand.

No guarantees on how much down time you will get, but I would do a port in from Fongo first to make sure you do not lose the number. You will probably not lose DSL when you get ported over, especially if you let your DSL provider in on your intentions.
