xplornet satellite

Post by freeuser-nat »

Hello everybody,

My internet provider is xplornet and they told me that no port can be opened for my connection. On their web site, it's mentioned :
"If you're on a 4G satellite system, try not to hard code a DNS or port forwarding. Xplornet's servers can override it, and it could complicate troubleshooting."

Does it mean that I cannot use freephoneline ? :( (By the way, I tried to forward the ports and I cannot hear anything).

I was trying freephoneline with the software (version 3.2.7.0) juts to see if I can make it work before going further with the unlock key and number porting. I opened a ticket but the "fongo support" closed it saying they do not provide support for freephoneline.

Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks !

Honestly, if it doesn't work I probably wouldn't spend any time trying to make it work. Not because of FPL but because of your internet provider.

I have expressed my feelings towards xplornet many times on this forum so I won't again, but I will say they are a very difficult company to work with unless you are just checking your emails and doing a bit of surfing. Sometime you can get lucky and other things will work, but everything else just seems to be a huge struggle with them.

I am in the process of trying to figure out how to set up an OpenVPN server on one of Fongo's sister companies VPS service, Cloud at Cost. Cloud at Cost sells virtual servers for $35, a one time fee. If I can get OpenVPN working though Cloud at Cost, I will then have my own IP address, and all ports free to use through the VPN.

My intention is to be able to use VOIP though 3G without dealing with the telco's traffic shaping, but OpenVPN should work with xplorenet also. You will probably get a walkie talkie quality though because of the latency, but maybe the latency is not that bad.

How is Skype though Xplorenet?

Thank you jake and bridonca,

I just got my internet access (2 weeks ago) and that's what I figured out about xplornet. Doesn't seem to be wonderful. Sadly, it is the only "decent" internet provider around here. Only have Videotron 1.5 MBPS/10 gb, Rodgers which ask a way to much for only 20 gb, and xplornet. So I guess I will have to deal with that bullshit. Does it mean that I cannot go with another voip like nettalk, ooma or magickJack neither ? They really piss me off.

You're a way more technical than me bridonca, but I will try to make some research about the OpenVPN stuff. Would appreciate if you come back to explain if you succeed with your idea...

I don't use skype since nobody around me uses it...

Thanks a lot for your time both of you, I REALLY appreciate !!!!

Well good for you! I would have given up once I knew I was stuck with xplornet. If you do find something that makes it better please let us know. I am sure there are others that are using xplornet.

You might want to try using a headset rather than speakers and mic, it will give you the best chance of getting decent sound.

Hi Jake,

Actually, I was ready to give up when I read your answer cause you were confirming what I figured out about xplornet.

And this morning, I've seen an email from fongo support... I tried and it works. Ok, the other side cannot understand what I say but at least, there is sound on both ends... better than before...

For sure, if I find something, I'll come here to give info.

Thank you Jake !
