Apartment buzzer settings

Post by nalphonso »

I recently moved into a condo and my freephoneline phone does not ring when someone tries to buzz in from the lobby.

Here is the setup:
Condo uses a phone number to get buzzed in - phone number is programmed into the directory and one can just select my name to dial directly.
I tried my cell phone number which rings and I am able to buzz anyone in.

When I give the condo my freephoneline number, the phone never rings. Instead the intercom/security system in the unit buzzes but never the phone. I am not able to buzz anyone in using the intercom system as this method is not supported by the condo.

Could someone please help me configure my device to make this work.

Thank you.

If you look in your online logs, do you see the calls?

There have been a few posts from others using this sort of setup, so there shouldn't be anything special (bar maybe the DTMF settings).

If you don't see the attempted calls in your logs, you may need to ask your condo managers if they can see a reason why it wouldn't go though (like being long distance for them or not an acceptable area code to them).

If you do see the attempted calls in your logs, then I think I would power down your ATA and try the desktop app.

With all this, I am of course assuming that normal calls go through just fine, say calling your FPL number from your cell.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, FPL works flawlessly for all other outgoing and incoming calls.
I checked the call logs and it says no user response under the comments for the buzzing in events.
Another thing that looked a little abnormal was the incoming buzzer calls showed 7 digits as opposed to the usual 10 digits.
Restarting the ATA device did not help. I will try the desktop app next.

I didn't really have a doubt that it was working, but as an service engineer for many years you get used to asking the obvious questions first :)

Maybe also set up something like xlite on your computer which will test your actual FPL login details. http://www.counterpath.com/x-lite-download/
What I am really trying to suggest is try different methods to see if anything works and then go from there.

The 7 digit thing is a bit strange, but that might just be because of how the condo has their phone calls set up. 'No user response' is not one I have seen before. You might have to get support involved if you can't get the desktop app or x-lite to work.

I tried the desktop app only using my cell phone as I did not get help to get someone to buzz in.
Using my cell phone I was only able to call the app once. The second and subsequent times it just rang once and hung up. I exited the app and tried again with the same outcome. Did this two more times. Also tried calling from the app to the cell phone with the same outcome.
The call logs only show the successful calls...not the ones that would not connect.
Using FPL through the ATA works fine with outgoing and incoming calls.

I tried the desktop app again which works well when calling or receiving normal calls but does not ring when I try to buzz from my condo. Do you think it could be some port settings on the ATA?

If your ATA and desktop app work normally then it should be working for your buzzer. Did you try the x-lite app?

I think the next steps I would take is to either contact Fongo Support and see if they can work it out or let you know what "no user response" means when the calls come in. Or contact the company that maintains/installed the buzzer system. They may have come across this problem before.

At the end of the day, if your ATA is working fine for normal calls I cant see why it would not work for the buzzer system bar any technical reasons for them not being able to call voip numbers (I have no idea what though). I think you are going to have to directly involve either Fongo or the buzzer company though.
