Phone rings, pick up, call disconnects. Why?

Post by pete_fpl »

I've noticed a new issue when receiving calls I haven't experienced in the past. A couple months ago I noticed when the phone rings and the moment I pick up, the call disconnects. There are times I pickup I can't hear the caller, but now the phone disconnects from the call entirely. Any reason this has started? I haven't touched phone or router settings in awhile either, so I'm a little lost.

Could be a robodialer trying to see if your phone number works just so that it can add yours to telemarketing lists.

Another possibility is SIP scanners.

SIP scanners are programs written by crackers (script kiddies). They look for ways to break into your home network by scanning for open ports. Typically, they'll scan for 5060, 5061 and a few others (some scan for a lot more than that). If a port is open, they can access your ATA (and, potentially, other devices on your LAN). They will try to make free calls using your services. That's one reason why port forwarding is bad (port forwarding opens ports; it's a security issue). So a SIP Scanner wouldn't be coming over Fibernetics' telecommunication network; a SIP scanner won't appear on FPL's call logs. If your phone is ringing constantly with caller ids that appear as 1001, 999, etc, then bots/crackers/scammers are looking (scanning ports) for ways to break into your services and devices.

SIP scanners will not show up in FPL call logs.

Use a good firewall, don't stick your ATA in DMZ, and don't forward ports unless you have no other choice. Doing otherwise is a security risk.

Also, it's best to properly enable QoS in your router for your ATA. Refer to your router's manual.
