I heard about this service in other forum. The web site is www.freecanadiancalls.ca

Looks like FPL in early stages. But I liked FPL setup better, even in those early days.

The major difference I see is they offer virtual Cell number to work with Telus one number unlimited.
The voice quality for cell is good.

Anywhoo let FPL know about this.

Surprisingly they are using the same block of numbers assigned to Fibernetics (aka. FPL's parent company)

It seems to be the same company but much less mature. I signed up to try it. Nothing to loose. They give you a free ATA config file. Not bad at all....

It's looking like now they're referral-based ie. you have to refer x people to have free service.
Last week it was paid for a bit and you had to pay $19 after the first 14 days were up

ya.... I think I like FPL more than those guys. I looked into them when they were doing beta testing and offered the service for free with apparently no stings attached, but something just didn't seem right.

Friends told me that FPL used to ask you to refer two friends during the registration but no obligation for your friends to subscribe. I was referred by my friends of the good thing of FPL then I tried and finally I paid for the configuration file to make it my second home phone line absolutely free. When I registered, I didn't need to refer other friend as per my memory?

The freecanadianacalls in other way need to register coupmax.ca and refer four friends that create hassle to yourself and friends.

Also they don't have contact information on the web site except a toll free line for activation, support using a form instead of forum, etc. No details or FAQ at all regarding various features, setup, and choose your number, etc.

I am not feeling comfortable to leave my personal information to get a free number from them and don't know free for how long, etc.

Wait a see any other users' feedback.

So far, I am happy with FPL's services, most of the time make clear calls. Athough some glitches from time to time but they have this forum to address your issues quickly in a quite timely/promptly and professional manner.

As others stated FPL setup is better and "Trustworthy".

I have FCC phone and Cellphone and work fine. Telus one number unlimited is OK.

BUT I would prefer FPL anytime and FPL is consistent at what they say on web site since they started.

FPL should try service like Skype One number to go. I don't mind paying FPL same charges than Skype.

Wholesale.
The vast percentage of all VOIP providers aren't actually CLECs themselves and lease all their DIDs from other CLECs. Fibernetics is one of the largest suppliers of wholesale VOIP services in Canada, so a large percentage of other VOIP companies use DIDs and/or origination/termination from us. Or if they don't buy directly from us, they may buy through a wholesaler of us, etc.

Keep in mind that Fibernetics and freephoneline are two separate entities though. Our calls travel over the Fibernetics network, but all our SIP servers and systems that link into that network are completely independent.

Thanks for the insight Steve, I was always under the impression that FPL is owned by Fibernetics.

And it seems like they've stopped accepting sign ups for now, wonder if they're going to as the existing users to pay for their service.

Get a FCC number in Vancouver to try on.

Just discoverd that FCC cannot make call to FPL# in BC and Alberta no matter a customer number or the FPL access number, sales number. I always got busy tone.

I can call forward FPL# in the followme to the FCC# but not the other way round! As my number is in Vancouver and FCC having problem calling FPL# in BC and AB!!

Using other carrier line or FPL line to call those numbers, no problem at all.

FCC have no problem accessing FPL other access numbers in ON, PQ provinces although having problem for individual lines in remote cities e.g. 705-881-2222 Barrie.

Not really impressive.

- not use you phone number for ATA registration, instead use a long account number.
- only one access line for remote VM (Toronto number) and you have to use account number with PIN (how can I remember that account number all the time!!!) Stupid.
- no on-line web portal to configure followme, you have to do with your sip phone connected, i.e. *72 is the only way.
- I took 10 days to get my number with 3 calls to the technical support. They are handling application manually as I heard the associate flipping many pages to get my order!!!

Overall, I love FPL's features and support

That's quite low-tech for a company offering telephone over the internet service! What's next, faxing your order forms?

Just get an update FCC fixed the NPA dialing problem for BC and AB and now all FPL# NPA are reachable.

Very quick technical support response of this kind, one day turn around and fix the problem.

VMI show up really quick after caller left a message. Sound quality is excellent.
Voice mail-email is in .wav format the can be played by most of the media players.

However, still have a lot of rooms to improve such as:

- Forum for support and share experience.
- Improve web portal to configure user parameter and followme like FPL.

Just noted that the FreeCanadianCalls is no longer accept new free activation. They seem got enough testers.

I was in before they shut down the free activation and so far just got two server down events. Most of the time is reliable. I used it as a PSTN trunk to my pbxes.org connection in addition to FPL.

Now I have a FREE mini home PABX with two PSTN Trunks, 1 SIP/ENUM/INUM trunk (with voxalot.com) and 3 extensions.

One extension at home, one at my office and one in my PC using 3CX softphone. All of them will be rang when incoming call from any one of the above trunks.

I can easily make outgoing calls by carefully design the dial plan to access individual trunk to PSTN or SIP/ENUM/INUM networks.
