Getting TONS of spam calls from weird numbers

Post by Thom »

Hello,

I've been getting a ton of phone calls from weird phone numbers of the format 573-XXX-XXXXXX. I've received about 10 calls already this morning. It's getting really annoying. If I answer, they begin speaking Spanish to me. I try to explain in English (and very poor Spanish) that I do not speak Spanish, and they have the wrong number, and to stop calling and remove my number from their list, but they do not stop. If anything, the calls are getting more frequent.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Why are these coming from weird numbers like 573-XXX-XXXXXX. This isn't even a valid phone number format AFAIK. Does anyone know if there is a way to block the numbers? From what I can tell, I can block individual numbers in Fongo, but can't seem to block the prefix 573. Does anyone know how?

Thank you!

Scammers can spoof any outbound CID (caller ID) they want. Answering calls from scammers just gets your number added to their calling list, which they pass around to other marketers and scammers who now know your number is active and that someone is willing to answer.

On a related topic, I've discussed scam calls (from faxes) before here: viewtopic.php?f=32&t=19278.
There is a related post over here: https://forums.redflagdeals.com/fido-lt ... #p30270827.

As for blocking, I'm not aware the app has an option to block anything other than specific numbers as opposed to being able to block a range of numbers.

Thanks liptonbrisk. I guess I shouldn't have answered and asked them to remove my number. :(

It's unfortunate the app doesn't offer an option to block a number prefix, or even a certain string of numbers...

Generally (not just on Fongo Mobile), I don't answer calls from numbers I don't recognize. If it's an urgent matter, the caller should be intelligent enough to leave a voicemail message with a callback number.

I feel your suggestion has value, and you can submit it for consideration here: https://support.fongo.com/hc/en-us/requests/new.
