Trying to entere friend's Fongo number as referral

Hi, a friend has Fongo mobile free. I am signing up for a Fongo mobile number now. I see a box at the end of the registration process to enter the friend's Fongo number for future referrals if one of us buys some premium services. When I enter their Fongo number, the prompt asks for @ and seems to expect an email address. However the prompt asks for either a Fongo number or an email address.

Is there a special way to enter the phone number? Or is it for a Fongo number on a premium plan?
