CID Name Display Passthrough

Post by fruvous »

After using fongo for years, I just noticed that the name display is not being relayed if I am forwarding my number to another carrier.

Is this a known limitation of fongo or is this just a bug?

Thanks.

Outbound CID name is preserved on the forwarded call with Fongo Mobile, provided origination (the service provider where the call is being placed) is sending it. I tested with “Simultaneous” forwarding enabled.

Some service providers, including some mobile service providers, don't support inbound caller ID Name.

Test by forwarding to another Fongo Mobile number. If forwarding to another Fongo Mobile number works, the problem is with the service provider at the terminating end (recipient).

Ensure the name isn't in the destination's contact list along with the associated incoming caller ID number when testing. Otherwise, the name will be pulled from the phone's contact list when the incoming call is received.

So here is my testing, I use sequential forwarding to a single number.

Called the fongo number, only numbers were displayed on my phone. Calling the phone directly using the same Freedom line, a name ID shows on my phone.

I just tested using "sequential" forwarding to two numbers in the forwarding list, the first of which is a Telus carrier number (one smartphone) and the second being another Fongo Mobile number (different smartphone).

The origination number, from Freephoneline, has been deleted from contact lists on both smartphones. I also checked the Fongo Mobile apps to ensure the Freephoneline number doesn't appear in the Fongo Mobile apps (under "Contacts") either. Consequently, the incoming caller ID name can't be pulled from any phone's contact list.

When calling to the primary Fongo Mobile number (doing the forwarding) from Freephoneline, Caller ID (CID) name from Freephoneline is sent to both the Telus carrier number and the Fongo Mobile number. The name appears on both smartphones (Telus and the second Fongo Mobile number).

Freephoneline (as do all Fongo services) sends the outbound CID name along with the number when making an outbound call (with Fongo Mobile, a "Remove ads" purchase is required to edit outbound CID name). That's important when considering the results from my tests.

Here are some points to consider:

1) According to https://www.freedommobile.ca/en-CA/supp ... ll-control,
"While Freedom Mobile’s Caller ID service does not include Name Display, some smartphone devices will automatically search for a name or business associated with an incoming call [Fongo Mobile doesn't]. Phone numbers that are saved on your mobile device with a name will also show the name and/or phone number during an incoming call."

2) Fongo Mobile does not perform caller ID name lookups, which cost money (a database service needs to be subscribed to and queried). Only the name is shown if the originating provider sends it. If the provider only sends a number, then only a number will be shown (this applies to incoming caller ID to Fongo Mobile specifically).

3) It's important to ensure that the origination number (incoming caller number) doesn't appear in the contact list on the Freedom phone, in this case, while testing. Delete the contact entry. Otherwise the name will be shown only due to it being in phone's contact list.

With the respect to point #2 above, Telus is similar. It doesn't perform caller ID name lookups, but Telus will show the incoming caller ID name provided origination sends it: "Caller name will only be displayed if the service is also provided by the caller’s network."
https://www.telus.com/en/support/articl ... -explained. Since Freephoneline sends caller ID name, Telus shows it.

In terms of Fongo services, in general, this hasn't changed since 2012:

Just a reminder, as has been provided in other threads, when the call display feature is enabled, it will only show the information that is being sent by the provider. if that provider only sends a number, we can only display a number. This is especially common for cell phone providers and a number of digital service providers.
