How is FPL (Fibernetics) unlimited internet affected by UBB?

Post by qwerty »

Can someone in the know let us know how will the unlimited internet plans that are still sold by FPL (Fibernetics) in Quebec be affected by the latest ruling on user based billing (UBB) ??? Are we all losing our "unlimited" internet privileges or does Fibernetics own their own DSLAM and will therefore NOT be affected by UBB?

Thanks...

I would like to know also. It was pretty much THE reason for me coming over to FPL DSL. If I no longer get unlimited, or close to it, the FPL will not be the best option for me; which is going to be a real shit.

I found this which might be interesting to some. http://www.digitalhome.ca/2011/01/usage ... an-you-do/

At present time since UBB has not yet been put in place, nor had all the specifics finalized by the CRTC, all of our service offerings will remain as they are.

As soon as we have a clear direction on what path we will have to take with this, a public announcement will go out to our customers.

Unfortunately since all DSL providers will be affected by this change that the CRTC is allowing to happen, there might not be any brighter alternatives elsewhere. Rogers has also begun their preliminary filing on their own UBB for Rogers and TPIA customers too. We at freephoneline will always work to bring you the best prices we can, and the continued support in our DSL service also helps us continue to grow and expand our free phone service network :)

Not finalized? The decision to impose UBB dates from last fall. The last details were ironed out 6 days ago. It's official, final and complete. Unless you guys have your own DSLAMs, it's 25GB in Ontario, 60GB in Quebec, 2.35$ per gigger above.

So the question is this: Who has DSLAMs in West Island Montreal? :) I'm looking for a new provider :)

Hello Laurent, I live in Pincourt. I think Colba Net has their own DSLAM but coverage is VERY limited in Montreal. Their 24mbps/1mbps ADSL2+ service runs for 17.95$ per month and is unlimited (no UBB BULLSH1T!). Its a pretty good deal ... MORE SPEED & NO LIMITS. What else can you ask for. :D

UPDATE: ZID.COM seems to be another one. They offer service in Montreal and Toronto.

Just reminder: VOIP won't be a good solution if the cost of your Internet service is HIGH. and turn out freephoneline may not exist anymore. no more youtube, movie download,...etc.

As much as I hate the idea of UBB and it's effect on adopting new technologies, VoIP usage is marginal. At highest quality, we're using around 50 MB per hour of phone use. If you talk 2 hours a day for the entire month, it represents about 3 GB.

The biggest impacts UBB has is towards the use of video streaming (Netflix, Youtube, Tou.tv, etc), and large files exchange.

The bandwidth consumption from VOIP is so low that it won't affect your internet bandwidth much at all. Here's an interesting post showing the average monthly minutes:bandwidth usage of one VOIP user http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r24617037-

Consider this though; even a basic landline is around $35/month from Bell - that's with no phone features, and only unlimited local calling. With the bandwidth insurance blocks that will be available for DSL subscribers, you can add blocks of 40gb/month bandwidth onto your DSL for what will be around 1/7th the cost of a basic landline phone service. That'll give you a ton more bandwidth for downloading, and still leave way more than you'll need for VOIP. Also, using the freephoneline VOIP gives you the advantage of a fully loaded set of phone features, unlimited calling to most major regions across the country, and very low per-minute international calling. For users that are concerned on usage and do add one of these inexpensive bandwidth blocks, it's certainly a justifiable trade-off considering the tons of extra bandwidth you'll have left for downloading.

I'm curious if any of our users have any stats on their average VOIP bandwidth usage per month? Unfortunately I'm struck for time right now and can't calculate anything out myself at the moment.

Another thing we must remember is all the political buzz about UBB recently, both liberals and conservatives are starting to voice concerns about it, and Mr. Clement and Mr. Harper have also announced that the decision is being reviewed. I think it's certainly best not to jump too fast to any conclusions right now until all those results are published.

For me, about 3 hours of talk for the entire month of January. A blip on the radar.

I found this today http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/arti ... et-billing
“The CRTC should be under no illusion — the Prime Minister and minister of Industry will reverse this decision unless the CRTC does it itself,” a senior Conservative government official said Wednesday.

“If they don’t reconsider we will reverse their decision.”
Maybe a glimmer of hope.

I am reading these articles and I have to admit that, for once, I am proud to be Canadian. This outrage is important in defending our rights and future of how internet services (ie. IPTV, VOIP, movie streaming, ETC...) and technology evolve in our country. This time around, let us not get intimidated and imposed the outdated beliefs of the CRTC.....

Let's not celebrate too early. The CRTC said they would review the decision, not revert it. Minister Clement said he would reverts the decision to something that is "adequate", not necessarily remove the UBB altogether. PM Harper said his government would review it, not necessarily act upon it.

So yes, we need to keep signing this petition as much as possible!
