FreePhoneLine over a private (non-internet routable VPN)
Given the amount of users popping in here asking for assistance when really there's a huge NAT issue, would FPL be considering setting up a private VPN (which can't be routed over the Internet, by the way) solution to alleviate such issues?

I am curious on how that would work. Kind of like a skype type setup? How would that help people with ATA devices?

This method works feasibly for the softphone, but personally, I overlooked at the ATA side of things. To be honest, I'm not too sure on how we should approach the ATA's having NAT issues and people not having the technical expertise to understand how NAT even works and how to get around with the issues.

Re: FreePhoneLine over a private (non-internet routable VPN)
Over the next few months we are hoping to make some large changes to the programming of the softphone which may (or may not) help with NAT traversal. Unfortunately NAT, often being hardware related, is something that we can try our absolute hardest to be friendly with, but sometimes having to port forward is the only option left.
We are always looking into NAT traversal as an ongoing thing here at freephoneline - we want to make our service as widely compatible as we possibly can and are always exploring many different options to tackle this obstacle when it comes up.

Unfortunately, NAT Transversal isn't the most reliable option of getting around issues with NAT altogether, but still worth a shot. X method of this Transversal method might work for this NAT implementation, but won't work for the other method of NAT implementation.
