Linksys PAP2 Line 2 usage and Google Voice set up?

Post by dotcom »

I have searched and have come up empty.

Here's what I have.

A FPL that is working through Line 1 on my Linksys PAP2
A Google Voice number. (Also Calgary FPL # as forward to)
Any number of free SIP services. I have signed up for Tpad now that Gizmo5 is being discontinued.
Mac OSx machines (2)
iPhone
Wireless Panasonic home phones.
Regular phone
T Mobile Pay as You go phone (to use when traveling in the US)
Bell 2 Wire router.

Other equipment such as wireless network HD and routers.

Can I take advantage of the second line to use Google Voice for in and outbound calls? Incorporating many SIP providers or is this ATA now only available via FPL?

Answer to google voice on a PAP2 is simply no. Google Voice uses XMPP to signal all the calls. Although they're testing out inbound SIP calling, don't expect a SIP gateway from google anytime soon.

You can sign up with PBXes.org, set up your GV with them and then register your line 2 with PBXes.

I have never looked into using pbxes for GV. I have messed around with my FS box many times trying to get GV working but never managed to.

I set up an account with pbxes adding GV as a trunk and got it working within 10 minutes. Thank you for this suggestion!

Is using your Google Voice account really worth $4.95/mnth? I guess if you make a lot of long distance calls it is. I don't spend $5/mnth in long distance currently. I did sign up for a free PBXes account, but you have to get SOHO to use GV.

I have it set up on my free account. Or at least I have not paid for anything I set up. I think the outbound calls are limited to 60 minutes a go, but that is OK with me.

Well to be honest, I didn't either. But I read on a forum that you go to TRUNKS -> Add Trunk -> Add SIP Trunk; then in the URL of the page change &tech=SIP to &tech=GTALK and you should get a page to add a gtalk account.

This doesn't sound the 'official' way of doing it, but it worked for me.

This is nice. Do you need to setup an outbound/Inbound routes. And I did not see GV trunk when check the Status, any idea? Did not have a chance yet to try. You could receive calls through PAP2, I guess, as it is through Gtalk.

Thanks.

Yes, I think I did set up the routes. This is the first time I have looked at PBXes, so I have no idea if I did it right or not. My goal was to get calls going out via GV so it would pick up the areas not covered by FPL in Canada.

I read on their site that the trunk will not show up in the status window. I was able to connect my 3CX softphone to the PBXes server as my extention and place a call out via GV (which was my goal). I did not try calling in though. My next step will be to connect it into my FS box and set up a dial plan to dial something like 9 first to route the call via PBXes and GV.

In pbxes, there is a default dial plan when you add Gtalk trunk, just tried without changing anything but did not work. Tried to remove the dial plan no luck either. Could you please let me know your dial plan in the trunk? Thanks.

I didn't change anything. I just added the trunk using the way I put above, set up an extention, and I also made an incoming and out going route to go to the extention I made. (I think I did anyway).
After that I connected my 3CX softphone using the pbxes connection details, saw the extention registered in the status panel and made a call.

When I was reading the FS setup I think there was a note to say you had to make and receive at least one call though the GV interface to get past some initial welcome message (I forget exactly what it was, but it was something like this). I have been using the interface in GV for a while so I have done those calls already. So I guess make sure you have made and received at least one call through the interface to be safe.

I have now managed to set the pbxes extention up as a trunk in my FS box and also a dial plan as I wanted. Now I dial 9 then the long distance number (1-xxx-xxx-xxxx) and it dials out through GV. I also tested calling my GV number and that now rings the house phones. So one happy chappy here today and many thanks to zombie999 for mentioning it.

They (pbxes) changed it so it won't work anymore on free accounts. You have to get a paid one then you should be able to add it straight in.
