hi,
is it possible to use dialup modem with freephoneline voip service? I've heard that it's doable with some voip providers (eg vonage). I tried freephoneline with g.711u codec but no success so far..
thank you

In theory, if you had a really clean dial-up connection it could likely be done. I'm not sure that g711u would be your best bet though, as it consumes more bandwidth than is available through most dial-up connections. It might be worth experimenting with g729a.

Yeah, g.711 is a no go. Dialup does not provide enough bandwidth, especially with the uplink. As already said, g.729a should be compressed tight enough to fit in dial up's bandwidth envelope. There are other problems though.
I have never done VOIP with SIP with dialup, I have did it with Skype. The biggest problem is latency. At the best of times, latency from dialup is about 1/3rd of a second. So it will sound like you are talking with a walkie talkie. I never had problems with jitter though, so the voice traffic was clear, though delayed.
