SPA2101 cannot hear incomming audio.

Post by naimc »

Hello,

I've been using an Spa-2101 device at home for a few months and have had no issues, so I though I knew what I was doing....

I convinced my Mom to drop her Telus phone line, got her registered with Freephoneline.ca purchased a new spa-2102 from Dell. Had the Spa-2102 working for a few days then the problem started : She can make and receive calls, but in both situation she does not receive incoming audio.

Here is the setup.

Internet: unkown cable modem, connected to Videotron
Router : Old Dlink DI-524 LAN IP 172.16.0.1
Spa-2102 Working in Bridge Mode (router disabled) static IP 172.16.3

SPA info
SIP tab: SIP TCP port min 5061, max 5080
RTP packet size 0.030
RTP port min 20000 RTP PortMax : 20005
I've enabled all of the NAT support parameters and I'm using the following stun server stun.xten.com

Configured freephone.ca on Line 2 profile ( line 1 is empty)
SIP Port 5061
Nap mapping Yes, Nat Keep Alive : Yes

We can place and receive calls, but in both situations we are not receiving incoming audio.
From what I understand this uses the SIP port 5061 and audio uses the RTP ports.

So on DI-524 when a call is active on the SPA-2101 I get the following session info :
Protocol Source IP Source Port Dest IP Dest Port
UDP 172.16.0.3 5061 208.65.240.142 5060
UDP 172.16.0.3 5061 216.93.246.16 3478
UDP 172.16.0.3 2004 208.85.223.4 17274

I was expecting to see some more RTP connections . So it seems like the DI-524 is not accepting and incoming RTP audio stream.

In the DI-524 setup I have a "Virtual Server" section, I setup rule to forward all the UDP ports 20000-20005 traffic to the 172.16.0.3 the SPA.

I don't see what I'm doing wrong other than perhaps the DI-524 is too old. It's a router from about 2008 firmware 5.10.

What kills me is that the setup was working for a few days.

Any suggestions please.

thank you

Naim.

Change your RTP port min from 20000 to 10000
Change your RTP packet size from 0.030 to 0.020

Power off modem, router and ATA.
Switch on modem...wait till modem is ready, then switch on router...wait till router is ready, then switch on ATA.

We'll be glad to hear back from you. :)

Thank you for the suggestion,

I was able to fix the problem by doing the following, I figured that the DI-524 being an old router might have issue with the NAT traversal the SPA was configured to do.

On the SPA-2101 I disabled the Nap mapping and Nat Keep Alive

Then created the Virtual server rules on the DI-524 router for the
SIP port 5061 and the 5 RTP ports I'm using 20000-200005. going to internal IP 172.16.0.3

After doing this my mom was finally able to make and receive incoming calls with incoming audio.

So my take away from this experience is that port settings for SIP and RTP traffic are not important. When registering to the SIP server (freephoneline.ca) my SIP client (Spa-2102) tell it which ports I'm using.
