Say's I don't have money in my account to make call

Post by loopygram »

Doesn't matter if its a local call or a long distance call as soon as I start dialing it tells me I don't have enough money to complete this call. I have called customer service and nothing is ever done. Is this one of the things we have to put up with because its free? It sucks and nobody seems to have an answer. Am I the only one with this problem? I bought and paid for my ATA but this is the problem I've had since day one. Very frustrating....and yes I am calling cities that are on the free calling list.

No, you shouldn't have that problem.

Could it be a dial plan error? After how many digits do you get this message? Do you always get the message, or do some calls got through OK?

Some go through ok and others will go through after 3 or 4 tries. It usually starts talking at about the 3rd digit.

Not sure what you mean by a dial plan error. Also, after I am finished a call and hang up my phone rings right away but of course there is nobody there.

Could these things be the result of a faulty ATA?

Now today I started to dial a local number and it said could not complete the call as dialed. I wasn't even done dialing and it just cut me off but when I hit redial it worked fine. Free or not this seems to be a piece of crap. I'm tired of all this stuff happening every time I dial a number. If these ATA's aren't any good then perhaps you should replace them. I never had this problem with Vonage so maybe I should just suck it up and pay the 19.95 a month.

There are 10's of thousands of FPL users enjoying the service without problem. If you don't bother to trouble shoot the problem, you should pay 19.95 a month and stay with Vonage or better yet, spend $30 + a month and use a true landline.

Sounds like a dialplan error in your ATA. Is your ATA from FPL? If yes, it should already have the proper dial rules and should just work.
If you brought your own device, I suggest you get the user guide for it and look in to "dial plan" or "dialing rules".

Judging by what you stated in your post, it looks like your ATA is from FPL, so you shouldn't have to adjust the dial rules. If you can get in to the admin screens of the ATA, it may still be worth looking at. Keep calling support until you get someone knowledgeable with the ATA's and dial plans.

Perhaps if you would read all my posts instead of just being a jackass right off the bat you would see that I have called numerous times and have posted here and keep getting no results. If you have nothing constructive to say perhaps its best not to say anything. Did your mother not teach you that? I'm sorry I'm not the techie you most obviously are but we aren't all brainiacs like you either. I bow to your knowledge oh smart one but if you are so smart perhaps you could fix my problem.

Thank you Tbrummel. Yes I did purchase the ata from FPL. I have had nothing but problems from day one. If I dial a number from a speed dial list it's fine. If I use redial its fine, but if I try to dial a number myself it tells me I don't have money in my account to cover this call even though it is usually a local call. I'm 66 years old and try very hard to do what I can to troubleshoot my problems but when I get no help from FPL I just don't know what else to do. I also don't really know what you mean by a dial plan error. What is a dial plan?
I just looked at my SIP settings and the dial string is
(911|[2-9]xxxxxxxxx|1xxxxxxxxxx|011xxxxxxxxxxxx.|98*|[6-7]x*xxxxxxxxxxx.) Not sure if this is right or is this what I should even be looking at?

May I ask what device you have? I am going to assume it is our Grandstream HT-286 - That dial string above is for Sipura devices only (Linksys PAP2T, SPA 2/3XXX).

loopygram, you are on the right track. What you are looking at is a dialplan/dial string. It's what the ATA looks for to match digits to decide if the number is good or not. It sounds like yours is matching incorrectly. We just need to get the dialplan right in the ATA. Maybe Kris (admin) can get you in touch with someone in support who has an understanding of the dial strings in the Grandstream (if that's what you have).

Grandstream HT-286's actually don't have a dial plan. All digits are passed through to the server unless specific settings in the Grandstream config are turned on to "catch" and process certain digits locally (like some star codes).

Ahhh, 10-4 on that. Have never had the pleasure of using a Grandstream, just assumed they'd have a dial plan, as I think every device I've ever configured does.

Yes it is a Grandstream HT-286 that I have. It has been a problem from day one and I'm just wondering if its a faulty ATA or is it possible it's my phone that's the problem? I just thought of that. Maybe I need to update my phone.

I sure am appreciating the help I'm getting now from both Steve and Tbrummel. It's far more constructive when people offer to help rather than just assume you should know everything.

Thank you again.

Have you tried a different phone? It could be that it is not sending the right tones to the ATA to understand. Failing that, it does rather seem like a faulty ATA. If you are dialling the same number and some calls go through and some don't, then I can only think it is the phone or the ATA.

I haven't tried a different phone but I am getting a new one in a couple of days so I will try that and see how that works - thanks.

Ok so I have a new phone. Not a cheap one. Started dialing the vet and same thing happened (not enough money in my account to complete this call) so it has to be the ATA. The call is local. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr - getting very annoying

Are you dialling fairly fast? I.e. not waiting more than two seconds between numbers?

If so, then I would advise calling our technical support department to look into a replacement ATA.

Is it necessary to wait 2 seconds between each number? I've never heard of that before. It works with redial or numbers called through the directory and they are really fast. I have talked to your technical support several times about this issue and I get absolutely nowhere.

Steve is asking if you typing the numbers in slowly, not that you have to leave a 2 second gap between button pushes.

It could be that your ATA is timing out and trying to dial only part of your number. This would explain why redial would work as that would 'dial' the numbers fairly quickly.

Steve's suggestion is to try dialling the number quicker if possible.

Ah I see what you mean. I think I dial them at normal speed but maybe I'm leaving too long in between. Is there any way that time out amount could be changed?

http://www.grandstream.com/user_manuals/HandyTone.pdf

Look on page 20 of the manual, it looks like there might be a couple of settings there that might help you or be worth playing around with. (No Key Entry Timeout, Early Dial)

Hi Loopy,

The setting is 'No Key Entry Timeout', which by default is set to 2. You could try to increase this to 4 and see if you have better luck. If you dial the entire number and then press talk/send or pickup receiver, does it work? Depending on your phone, you may want to try changing from tone to pulse dialing to see if it is better for transmitting tones.
