with FPL DSL can I BYOD (DSL Modem)?

Post by alf »

I'm thinking of adding a DSL line and was wondering if I can use my own DSL modem. Its a new modem not locked to any service or would I need to buy one from
FPL ? What I'm thinking to do is port my Bell landline and my primus VOIP to FPL and with saving about $50 a month using the savings for DSL first year $31.85mo and 2nd year around $44 and keep my cable internet to have a more redundant internet and phone. Has any one done this?

As far as I know you will be able to use your own Modem, I can't see why not at any rate.

The only thing I would mention though is the $19.95 promotion for DSL is only valid when you buy or rent a modem from them.
Promotion valid with Modem Rental or Purchase
Other than that I am very pleased with my DSL with them. Especially the fact that the download is not capped, which was the main reason I ran from Bell.

Will the Thomson 784 support DSL and wan internet at the same time or is it one or the other. Also can the Thomson 784 be sat up to if dsl connection fails can the modem switch to the WAN internet on its own?

I'm sorry I don't know. I only have the 784 set up as a DSL modem. If it helps, I have only had the FPL DSL only go down a few times since I had it and that was in very bad storms when other places were getting power cuts. Normally it is solid. As far as I know it is just a Bell DSL package that FPL resells.

I set up the 784 promotional package for both myself and my daughter and have been very pleased with it.

Hi alf,

On the 784 modems, you can only have it set up to use the WAN port or the regular (4 ports) ports on from the built in router. If you want to use the WAN it will disable the 4 regular ports and run directly through the WAN and use the router that you have connected. The configuration in the modem would also change to "Bridge Mode" in order to allow you to continue use the other router. If your router would fail, then the 784 would have to be set up again in routed PPP to re-enable the ports on it.
