Home phone line quality

Post by pedor »

I've been trying out the Home Phone service with Grandstream ATA from FPL before I commit to porting my existing phone number. I have one desk phone plugged into the ATA directly which is connected to my router. I've found there is a constant background hiss or white noise that is noticeable when no other sounds are on the line (like in between dialing numbers, or in between rings). The same phone used on my regular land line has no background noise. I have also tried a cordless phone on the FPL line and get the same white noise so it doesn't seem to be a factor of the phone but rather the ATA line. In addition on some test calls there have been random tone sounds, as if someone is pushing a phone number button.

Are others on FPL hearing this? I purchased the ATA and config file direct from FPL, but are there config settings that would help with this?

You probably have a wonky ATA, the service itself would likely not be producing this hiss. Change the codec and see if that makes a difference.

My suggestion would be to use codec 711a in the list of preferred vocoders.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am using the FPL recommended settings for the ATA-286, which is "PMCU" - I think this is equivalent to G.711(u). I also tried using G.729 but I didn't notice any difference.

Today while on the phone, the call dropped and I got a fast busy signal so the party had to call me back. Not sure what that was about!
