Thanks for the link but why does it matter if its a fake or not? Most time "fakes" are factory over runs or seconds which for home use, really doesn't matter much.

Well if I pay 50$ for a pap2t I would want to make sure it wasn't fake. Either way, if I know it is fake, there isn't a problem. But if someone sells me a fake when it is supposed to be genuine or refurbished, then I won't be happy.

Some dodgy models have been reported to catch fire, so there could be a safety issue also.


From what I understand, a fake is not made by linksis/cisco but from a company copying what they see with cheaper parts. A referbished or seconds model should be sold as such, and I don't really see those as fakes.

I have never had an ATA die on me until I bought a fake PAP2 direct from China. It worked well for 2 months. $30 down the drain.

I got this ATA with eyes wide open, but some people buy these fake PAP2 devices expecting a real device, and end up with junk.

Interesting, I would be choked if I paid $50 + shipping to find out it’s a fake.
On the other hand, I have knowingly purchased fakes for under $30 landed into Canada, about 8 to be exact and have never had a problem. I have switched 8 friends and family from Telus or Shaw to freephoneline and not one has failed to date.
