Out of the blue, choppy incoming audio and slow internet

Post by Taurus »

Not sure where to start here. My phone has been working fine when all of a sudden the incoming audio has become choppy and the internet speed has slowed down.
My old router was a Linksys WRT160N and I tried a new router, a D-Link DIR 655. My ATA is a GrandStream HandTone-286 and my ISP is cogeco in Hamilton.
I need some ideas on how to trouble shoot this problem, I guess the first step is to connect direct to the modem. I'll try that as soon as I disconnect from here.

Going through the modem direct, everything is ok. It's just with the router it acts up.

Upgrade the router firmware to DD-WRT, both routers look to be able to be upgraded. At the very least, upgrade the firmware. Firmware is always the issue with these problems.

hey, i have cogeco and have the dir-655 as well with the grandstream 286 and it works amazing! no problems what so ever, make sure your router firmware is up to date, also, put your ata on a static ip, and do port forwarding from the router to your ata, mine worked fine even without the port forward but i did it anyways just in case.

Thanks guys, I have put my fix on hold. Cogeco is sending a tech, they said my modem is messed up. It's been fine up to about 2 or 3 days ago, it's been running here without a hitch for about a year otherwise.

Well after a few weeks of messing around I still have phone problems. It's intermittant and I don't think related to the actual phone service or the equipment. Cogeco tech said my modem was messing up and sent out a service tech who said there isn't a problem, amazing considering it has been fine for a year plus then blam, crappy connection. I ve tried speed tests with results all over the place, any where from 1-14 MBS. Hooked up the cable modem direct to the PC and still have speed problems. You ever get the feeling that your ISP doesn't know what they are doing or just don't give a crap?

Any how, thanks for your assistance but it looks like I will be complaining to my ISP some more.

Are you stuck in a contract with your ISP? We have some great rates on DSL internet. With DSL you won't experience the same type of speed fluctuation that's prone to happen with cable internet.

After another phone call, the tech on the phone said there are inconsistances with my modem, NO KIDDING !!! The last time they said the same thing and the tech visiting my house said there was no problem with their equipment. Anyhow, they replaced it with a Cisco DPC3000 modem and so far so good, it works great. Freephoneline is back to working great, thanks people.

Any futher problems like this and I will be changing ISP.

It is amazing how much tech support (hahahaha) just says reboot, or software, or useless information (except where the 5% of the time it is actually that simple -- and anyone with any windoze problems that doesn't play the multi-reboot game as step #1 or #2 of troubleshooting deserves crappy tech support). They always try to pass the buck, but as it turned out, the initial diagnosis was right and the home-visit tech probably just didn't want to bother with the paperwork to swap out your modem on trip #1!

Glad you are functional again!
